Ohio girl, 16, fatally shot after her father thought she was an intruder, mother says

A 16-year-old Ohio girl was fatally shot by her father after he thought she was an intruder breaking into their home, according to a 911 call obtained by NBC News.

The girl, Janae Hairston, died Wednesday at a Columbus hospital about an hour after she was shot in the garage of her parents' home on Piper Bend Drive.

In the eight-minute 911 call, Hairston's mother told a dispatcher that her husband accidentally shot their daughter. The hysterical mother begged for an ambulance as a man in the background said repeatedly, "Breathe, baby."

"My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder," the mother said. "She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God."

The mother said she thinks the teen was shot in the chest. Both of the parents could be heard asking what the girl was doing in the garage.

Before you shoot them? What if it’s NOT a serial killer? Even if it was a robber, do you just want to kill someone? I will never understand.

Why not send your wife to check on the kid (or kids), and make sure ahead of time the intruder isn't one of your children? The more I think about the sequence of events as reported, the more suspicious I am.

So crazy to go shooting at anything that moves, especially if one has children in the house.

In a local news source they mentioned the time was 4:30 AM. Not that it makes a world of difference, but this guy somehow did not think it possible his teenager would be in the garage at that hour.

Unusual maybe, but still most likely that a noise in your house is coming from an occupant thereof.

on the weekends playing video games, watching movies, working on projects at home.

One time she had a sleepover with a friend, had a squabble with the friend and came home in the middle of the night. I didn't assume she was an intruder and shoot her.

I still don't understand why you don't look at the person you are shooting before you pull the trigger. Or why not call the police.

If words matter, why did this girl have to die today?

Because dad had the right to own a gun? Because he formed part of a well regulated militia? To provide necessary security of a free State? Seems he was none of the above. He was a paranoid man firing a weapon into the darkness over the perceived threat of an intruder.

If the words of our founders can be bent to allow ordinary citizens to run rampant with firearms, what the fuck good is our constitution anyway.

It's an exurban cul-de-sac of modest homes carved out of a cornfield SE of Columbus.

Any thief would be a fool to go so far down a dead-end road to rob some random suburbanite. HE DID NOT NEED A GUN FOR HOME PROTECTION.

Home of the Piper Bend Cornhusk Doll collection? Rumored to be one of the most extensive collections of rare and exquisite cornhusk dolls of almost unimaginable value?

A gun would be foolish. That house should be ringed with neutron-bomb landmines!

It is a cultural treasure which far exceeds mere human life.

I've got no problem with owning guns for home defense. I have several (which are kept locked up).

BUT......

If you hear something, grab your gun, grab your phone, gather your family, and RETREAT TO A SECURE ROOM. Call 911. Wait. Only shoot if an intruder is trying to get into the room you're holed up in. It's safer for yourself and your family. Stupid Castle Doctrine laws make every idiot think he's Rambo going into battle

The intruder(s) will have to be kicking in our bedroom door, which is reinforced and has a deadbolt, before I'll start shooting. And that's after I've been yelling, warning them that I'm armed and have called 911.
