Bradley police officer pleaded for her life before man shot her to death with her own gun

https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2022/1/3/22865916/bradley-officer-rittmanic-pleaded-life-man-allegedly-fatally-shot-her-own-gun-prosecutors

A Bradley police sergeant was “desperately pleading for her life” moments before a gunman fatally shot her with the officer’s own gun, Kankakee County prosecutors said Monday.

Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe is seeking life sentences for Darius Sullivan, 25, and Xandria Harris, 26, who face a litany of felony charges in last week’s hotel shooting that killed Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and critically wounded her partner. He is pushing for federal murder charges to be filed against the two and for federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty.

Wednesday’s incident unfolded about 9:56 p.m., when Rittmanic and her partner, Officer Tyler Bailey, responded to a noise complaint regarding dogs barking in a parked car outside the Comfort Inn in the 1500 block of North State Highway 50, Rowe said during Harris’ bond hearing Monday.

When Bailey found out the car had belonged to Harris — who he knows as an acquaintance of Sullivan — the officer met Rittmanic in the hotel lobby and asked a clerk whether there were any rooms under the names of “Xandria Harris” or “Darius Sullivan,” Rowe said.

do acts that remove their own humanity and they are a severe danger to others.

I've mused for decades every time have thought of the death penalty and have somewhat old school solution.

Nations could find a remote temperate island with Nature's carrying capacity for a given number of people.

Those that lose their humanity by an act get a one-way ticket to the island. Nothing comes in (like food, energy) and no communications (phone or internet), not even books nor pen and paper and on their own for medical. The new resident would find for sustenance in what had been developed by prior or current residents or themselves. The residents have forfeited their link to accumulated human endeavor. The residents could find their own societies.

The island would be heavily guarded with attempt escapes treated like invading forces by a United Nations military coalition.

One other thing and normally would include as cruel and unusual punishment would also take place. The resident would be castrated or otherwise sterilized. Sterilization is a death of an individual as far as a future in human gene pool. Perhaps the residents would be less aggressive.

Over time there might be inventions by the residents. There could be a method for human society to harvest the residents' invention. Not sure how this would work.

No off island human relationships preferably or actual contact with human beings allowed except for enforcement actions.
This idea is brutal. The thought comes from Oz and other former prison colonies.

I'm a supporter of the death penalty in certain situations like this. It can also be used as leverage to find out where victims bodies are. So, yep. Death.

I wish we could ban handguns altogether.

But in certain extreme indifference to life 1st degree murder, I support the death penalty. Some psychopaths are irredeemable, pose a threat to society, including those who are employed to incarcerate these people and the other inmates who will be their next victim, and solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punishment. But, that is where these people must be housed. Solitary confinement is torture.

They abolished the death penalty here nearly 11 years ago. It was early 2011, but I don't remember which month.
So, if the charges are only state murder charges, there is no death penalty to pursue.
I think it's a mistake. Just put them away for life without parole.

They can't shoot an unarmed suspect simply for physically attacking them, but once overtaken and disarmed by the suspect they are now at their mercy. Sad for the fallen officer and her family and hope her partner recovers.

Don't spread baseless claims if you haven't read the article.

As Harris struggled with the officers, Sullivan pointed the gun and shot Bailey in the head, Rowe said. He then allegedly turned the gun to Rittmanic and shot at her as she tried to run away.

Sullivan allegedly chased Rittmanic down the hallway before pinning her against a door. Sullivan struggled to unjam his gun using his right hand and mouth while also trying to disarm Rittmanic with his left hand, Rowe said.

As the scuffle ensued, Sullivan called out to Harris, telling her to “cock the gun, cock the gun,” prosecutors said. Harris joined Sullivan, helping him successfully disarm Rittmanic.

Well that certainly changes things, wonder why she didn't draw her weapon and return fire immediately.

The story I read must have been the cliff notes version, it just mentioned she was disarmed by the suspect and shot with her own gun. I guess in the fight or flight situation, she chose flight.

You are not required to take a beating just because you possess a weapon more deadly than the one you are being attacked with. Lethal force to prevent serious bodily injury is legal in all 50 states.

Here, it would have been a justifiable shooting since the suspect actually fired a weapon he possessed.

This is certainly a tragedy, but it is also in no way an opportunity to engage in cheap copaganda.

before their partner is allowed to defend them or they to defend themselves.

Also note both "complied" and didn't fight about being arrested - they turned themselves in, so they are still alive. It's nice they consented to that, since we know that if they put up a fight, the cops are not allowed to do anything that will harm them and they should just wait until they agree to being arrested.

It does not seem certain that a lot of DU wouldn't claim, had she shot Sullivan dead after he shot Bailey, that she should be fired and that she is a racist and murderer. She could have run away. Oh, she tried that.
