Good Job, AG Garland!

That was a very good presentation, and it covered a lot of ground. Expectedly, he did not name names, but made it clear that they are going to go after anyone at any level, wherever there is evidence.

I'm very encouraged by his remarks. He's staying within the boundaries of not specifically naming anyone or divulging what investigations are producing in terms of evidence. He really has to stay within those boundaries.

However, this is not a wishy-washy Attorney General. That seems clear to me.

He is just flat doing his job. The problem is that many people don't understand his job very well.

He's on this!

But political affiliation isn't what he's after, just the crime committed.

Just cuz one has an R or D or I or L or any other political affiliation of endorsement, or perhaps a foreign citizen, is beyond the point.

The coincidence is that the Majority align with R's. But they aren't the sole perps. And that's why he left that door closed.

I would like to hear him rattle off a list of politically endorsed perps but that's probably irrelevant to his job.

"Only the truly impatient will think he did a bad job with this speech."

I agree. I just wish there weren't so many of those "truly impatient" people here at DU.

The first OP about Garland's speech that I happened to read was sprinkled with posts from naysayers who seemed to think he said nothing of importance and reiterated the same old tired refrains if negativity that we've heard so many times before. I honestly believe that some of them wouldn't have been satisfied unless Garland had made his entrance accompanied by FBI agents marching Trump out there in shackles and chains! (And some of them would have found a way to wave even that away.)

Those comments drive me crazy, and I can't quite figure out why. All I know is that I'm sick of people who rush in to every post about a positive development to rain all over the parade before it even gets started. It just seems ... mean spirited, somehow..

People absolutely have a right to their opinions, whatever they may be. I just don't understand the compulsion to throw a bucket of ice water over ever single post voicing a positive or hopeful opinion.

The problem that Garland has is this case is not a who dunnit. It isn’t a mystery. The whole world watched Trump incite the riot in real time. We saw it with our own eyes and we heard it with our own ears.

Until Trump is brought to justice there isn’t anything Garland can say or do that will suffice. That’s just the reality of the situation.

Prosecuting hundreds of MAGA maggots is all fine and good but if we let their king escape justice then we’ve failed.

Garland said what he had to say; give me more time.

The worst thing that happened on 1/6, what we should be worried about, is that a group of people plotted to overthrow our government and Merrick Garland said he is investigating the people who invaded the Capitol, he did not say he is investigating the people who planned the coup, he said he will follow the facts which may lead to people in upper levels.

Today marks 3 weeks since the select committee sent a criminal referral to Garland for Mark Meadows, if Garland is following the facts we should be hearing about a Mark Meadows indictment shortly. Meadows is the only coup plotter that I am aware of who is under investigation and the select committee pushed it.

We will follow the facts wherever they lead."

Please note the part about "holding all January 6 perpetrators -- at any level -- accountable under law."

Following the facts where they lead is where it all starts. That's how they get the evidence that is needed to hold the aforementioned perpetrators accountable.

You wrote: "Meadows is the only coup plotter that I am aware of who is under investigation and the select committee pushed it."

The key phrase here is "that I am aware of." I don’t know which coup plotters are under investigation, or to what extent, and I'm pretty sure you don't know, either. What you or I are "aware of" is just the tip of what I am sure is an enormous iceberg that we know very, very little about.

So, Garland will take the time to do it right and convict ...without successful appeals

To do investigations and convictions takes time...lots of time

Merrick Brian Garland is an American attorney and jurist serving as the 86th United States attorney general since March 2021. He served as a circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1997 to 2021. ...........

more info on Merick Garland:

Merrick Brian Garland (born November 13, 1952) is an American attorney and jurist serving as the 86th United States attorney general since March 2021. He served as a circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1997 to 2021..............................more information below, also.. from Wikepedia:

A native of the Chicago area, Garland attended Harvard University for his undergraduate and legal education. After serving as a law clerk to Judge Henry J. Friendly of the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr., he practiced corporate litigation at Arnold & Porter and worked as a federal prosecutor in the Department of Justice, where he played a leading role in the investigation and prosecution of the Oklahoma City bombers.

President Barack Obama, a Democrat, nominated Garland to serve as an associate justice of the Supreme Court in March 2016 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Antonin Scalia. However, the Republican Senate majority refused to hold a hearing or vote on his nomination. The unprecedented refusal of a Senate majority to consider the nomination was highly controversial. Garland's nomination lasted 293 days (the longest to date by far), and it expired on January 3, 2017, at the end of the 114th Congress. Eventually, President Donald Trump, a Republican, nominated and appointed Neil Gorsuch to the vacant seat.

President Joe Biden nominated Garland as Attorney General in January 2021. He was confirmed by the United States Senate in March.

Two questions only..............................................................................................................

Do you think this guy will prosecute the bad guys?.. . .Any Experience?...

People have gotten so conditioned to the low class, screaming, threatening, posturing, manipulative bullshit of the Trump administration that they think that is normal. It. Is. Not.

We must abide by the rule of law, even if the other side doesn't. Do I wish things would happen faster? Of course, but not at the expense of having the whole thing thorwn out in court due to a rush to judgement and mistakes being made. Get the evidence, completely encircle the leadership of the coup and insurgent war (that's really what is happening, think Northern Ireland) and when the case is rock solid and the House has made the main issues public..... checkmate. Don't tell the other side what you have in store, or let them know who or what you are specifically doing. Let them do what they are doing .... digging their own graves with their own interviews, while getting things in order. I expect we're going to see action relatively soon, and when the dominoes start falling, it will happen fast.
