Jefferson City (MO) Fire details ways to prevent winter home fires

JEFFERSON CITY — The Jefferson City Fire Department ran a record 5,000 calls last year and has already responded to 100 calls since the start of 2022.

The cold weather generally triggers an increase in home fire alarms. Jefferson City Fire reports half of all home fires happen in December, January, and February.

“You’re seven times more likely to have a fire during that season," said Jefferson City Fire Division Chief Jason Turner. "Stoves, wood stoves, supplement heating devices, space heaters, candles, the holidays, all those things kind of contribute to what those three months statistically show across the nation as an increased risk of fires within the homes."

The department reports 1 in every 5, home fire deaths involves heating equipment.
