Justice Neil Gorsuch Slammed After He Suggests Flu Kills 'Hundreds of Thousands' Each Year

Many on social media criticized and mocked Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch after he incorrectly suggested on Friday that the seasonal flu kills "hundreds of thousands" each year in the United States.

The Supreme Court on Friday heard oral arguments for and against President Joe Biden's mandate that large companies require employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be tested weekly for the novel coronavirus. The mandate would be monitored and enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). While the court's liberal justices appeared supportive of the Biden administration's requirements, some of the court's conservative justices appeared more skeptical of the mandate.

In reality, the flu kills, at most, tens of thousands each year—not hundreds of thousands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu kills between 12,000 and 52,000 Americans annually.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic killed nearly 800,000 Americans from 2020 through 2021. In September 2018, then CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said that the previous winter's flu season had been the worst in some four decades, resulting in an estimated 80,000 deaths.

Either the Federal Government has the power to mandate vaccines or they don't. It's a legal question, not a medical one.

But a lot of the arguments I've been reading have involved wildly uninformed medical discussion. Biden's policy decisions regarding workplace conditions during a pandemic are necessarily dependent on accurate medical information, and the whole point of OSHA is in the name. Declaring policy regarding public safety illegal without taking the medical facts into account seems shortsighted at best.

It is completely within the authority of OSHA to be able to mandate work place vaccinations. The Republican appointed members of the court seemed to be tip toeing around trying to figure out how they were going to justify both staying the nadate and then overruling it.

Justice Bryer correctly pointed out that there is no alternative to vaccinations.

The SC is setting themselves up to for a big public backlash with the rulings they are set to make this year.

I like to make bad predictions, so here is one: Roberts will resign after this term. He'll cite the overly partisan nature of the court as the reason and may call out Republicans for how nominations are held up and then accelerated, all based on politics.

They want to do away with osha and the epa to make regulation impossible. Basically require legislation for every single regulation.

Roberts resigning. On his watch the court is losing all legitimacy and credibility

The bizarre justice statements make them sound like they're witnesses, not judges

He's a lawyer. He has a lot of high powered lawyer friends and associates.
He's the king of their hill. These connections carry a lot of weight, and are very useful. And, no matter how f'ed up SCOTUS is, or becomes, it won't stain Roberts in terms of finding an income. Any large law firm would be glad to have him. "Former SCOTUS Chief Justice John Roberts Works Here !".
He has the gig for life, so even if he doesn't like it, he has all the time in the World to make a decision on whether to stay, or not. I'd love for him to resign with a Dem in the WH.

and I don't listen to him.

I know he's a political appointee, but it's amazing anyway that a high court justice can't resist spreading shabby, obviously dishonest political lies.
