…which was authored by a man who knows absolutely fuck-all about education or educators.

They’re so spooked by CRT here, when it is not taught in a single school district in the state. This will add hours to teachers’ workloads, not to mention that sometimes plans have to be adjusted on the fly.

Indiana’s legislators are so fucking stupid, it’s unbelievable.

(And I think these chuckleheads would even challenge 2+2=4.)

7. Indiana bill to limit conversations on race, politics in schools receives mixed opposition

https://www.wboi.org/news/2022-01-07/indiana-bill-to-limit-conversations-on-race-politics-in-schools-receives-mixed-opposition

Lawmakers in the Senate education committee endured nearly eight hours of testimony and debate Wednesday on a controversial bill focused on school curriculum and content. Many people opposed some or all of the bill, but for very different reasons.

Senate Bill 167 focuses largely on parental input on curriculum and how schools present lessons on topics like race, religion, and politics.

As written, it would require that schools create curriculum review committees led by parents, and post learning materials – including lesson plans or syllabi – online. The bill also would require that schools receive parental consent before providing ongoing mental health, psychological or social emotional support for students. [snip]

But educators, students and parents opposed to the legislation worry it goes too far already, is too vague in places, and could stifle organic discussions on important topics. Many educators who testified said it comes with more costs and administrative work for schools that are focused on responding to the fallout from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill is receiving community pushback. The reasons for opposition are many and varied, well covered in the above.

The General Assembly is in a short session, so the leadership may decide it’s utlimately not worth wasting time on. Nonsensical, grandstanding bills like this should die. The legislative overreach here is scary, thanks to the GOP supermajority that basically listens to nothing but the voices in its own head.

In committee last week, the Dems had him over a barrel on almost every point of this bill.

But such a triviality as that has never stopped GOP before.

The Democratic caucus here is amazing in its pushbacks on Republican nonsense like this. It has to be exhausting, but it is oh-so needed.

seemed heavily focused on this issue. They want education that is tailored to their sensibilities (and that of their supporters) only, which is impossible, impractical, and just wrong. If people care so much about every little thing their children learn in PUBLIC SCHOOLS, they perhaps need to homeschool them or send them to a private school they feel better reflect their "values". But they shouldn't be able to dictate what the vast majority of kids are being taught in PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

…if someone didn’t want to say it, or objected to it because of the “under God” reference.

The bill author’s answer basically was that if you didn’t want to say it, you were un-American.

See the batshit craziness we put up with here?

dedicated teachers. Why just look at what some parents believe about vaccines and medical treatments. And just ask some about geography, math, world history, writing and spelling in English, and everyone knows at least 3 languages, right?

then the parents should teach their own damn kids. Most of them aren't qualified to do so, and they have no business judging the curriculum of people who are actually trained to do the job. They sure as hell don't have the right to dictate what gets taught to other peoples' kids.
