https://www.justice.gov/opa/speech/attorney-general-merrick-b-garland-delivers-remarks-first-anniversary-attack-capitolThose who assaulted officers or damaged the Capitol face greater charges.
Those who conspired with others to obstruct the vote count also face greater charges.
Those who did not undertake such conduct have been charged with lesser offenses particularly if they accepted their responsibility early and cooperated with the investigation.
Our answer is, and will continue to be, the same answer we would give with respect to any ongoing investigation: as long as it takes and whatever it takes for justice to be done consistent with the facts and the law.
I understand that this may not be the answer some are looking for. But we will and we must speak through our work. Anything else jeopardizes the viability of our investigations and the civil liberties of our citizens.

(9,367 posts)Under the law. Don't expect DOJ to charge Trump for being an asshole. Or Bannon for his apparent disregard for basic hygiene.

(54,770 posts)thing, even if he knew it was going to take evidence like trump directing waves of insurrectionists to specific Capitol entrances, blocking troops from responding, etc.
I bet I could find similar comments from FitzGerald, Mueller, etc.
Until they actually do something, I think the polls are where we are going to have to resolve matters. We have other problems in this country.

(21,351 posts)day 26 since the select committee sent a criminal referral to Garland for Meadows ignoring a subpoena.
I know why Garland is not acting yet. It isn't because there isn't evidence that he ignored a subpoena.

(1,528 posts)I may be wrong -- but I think I am not -- is there not some DOJ policy that they will not discuss cases involving candidates for office within XXX days of the election so as not to seem to be interfering with the election?
This matter came to the fore when the FBI Director started running of at the mouth about Hillary's emails.
This is important because if DOJ is homing in on someone who is running for election, we will not know about it and the individual under investigation can continue to claim he/she is without sin, when, in fact, they are about to be charged with heinous crimes.
I want Garland to get off the dime and announce investigations -- who is being investigated, for what are they being investigated -- and I want to see him presenting cases to grand juries now, not when he is throttled by some DOJ policy.

(15,646 posts)given the dire circumstances. Not a lot different from what the working and middle class have been experiencing over the past almost 50 years expectations that exceed results. Some call those expectations unrealistic while others call them necessary for longer-term societal well-being. In the end, the proof is in the pudding. Lets hope your inclination is right.

(5,325 posts)The 10 counts of obstruction of justice in the Mueller investigation are not complex and occurred independently of the January 6 crimes, a long time ago now. They should have already been indicted.
