Hobbs, N.M., mother confesses to leaving newborn in dumpster

A newborn baby left in a bag in a southern New Mexico dumpster over the weekend was found alive. The teenage mother reportedly confessed. This unbelievable story could have had a much worse ending - had three unsuspecting angels been at the right place at the right time.

The baby is alive and stable Sunday night in a Lubbock Hospital. The 18-year-old mother, Alexis Avila of Hobbs, has been charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse. But who knows what would have happened to her - or the baby - if it weren't for three random people and a well-place surveillance camera.

"Something wasn't right, I saw the officers' faces, and they did not look right. They really didn't,” said Joe Imbriale owner of Rig Outfitters and Home Store. He said police called him Friday night, with a request to view his surveillance footage. "I said 'what is it we are looking for' and she goes 'we're looking for somebody who dumped a black garbage bag in your dumpster.' I turned around, I said 'please don't tell me it was a baby,'" said Imbriale.

Video shows who is believed to be Avila leaving the dumpster at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon. Six hours later, three people are seen searching through the same dumpster, pull out a black bag, and start looking through it. Seconds later, a woman reacts to what's inside, and starts opening the bag. She pulls out the newborn baby, still alive - and tends to it. Once the child is wrapped up, she brings it to their truck while a man in the group is on the phone. They pull the truck away from the dumpster, and people can see police and an ambulance arrive minutes later. Police immediately start looking in the dumpster, and paramedics take the child to a local hospital.

As for Avila, investigators located her car over the weekend. They say she confessed to giving birth to the baby - and taking it to the dumpster. She's supposed to face a Lea County judge Monday morning.

to have done that.

When the SCOTUS overturns Roe, we'll be seeing a lot more of this.

I don't know her story, but I am not jumping to "she's a monster" without knowing what was going on in her life and her head.

those laws are rarely publicized, so many young people do not know about them. It's one more reason to have life skills and civics classes in our public schools. That young woman probably never heard of that state's infant surrender law.

This story brought back that memory:

Neil Young - Rockin' in the Free World

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
There's an old street light (near a garbage can)
Near a garbage can (near a garbage can)
Now she put the kid away, and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life, and what she's done to it
There's one more kid that'll never go to school
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool

Keep on rockin' in the free world

We did it more like the G3 version.
But, it's easy for others to join in, and plenty of room for solos.
My buddy recorded it in his home studio. He played everything but the lead vocal & guitar solo. I did those.
Not a Young fan, but this is a fun song to interpret.

When you ban abortion, especially for underage people. Or put barriers up in front of them. Maybe she didn't know that she could surrender her baby at the hospital or a church?

If we as a country are going to ban abortion, we'd better bring back the baby hatches.

Was there a women’s clinic still available anywhere? And I mean a real one, not a phony “crisis pregnancy” clinic that offers “help” right up until you can’t get an abortion and then leaves you on your own. PP offers information, education, contraception, physical exams, and prenatal care. But PP must be closed down and burned to the ground.

She may have gotten pregnant at 17 — which begs the question: how old is the daddy and where is he?

So many questions, and so few easy answers. Don’t tell me “prison for life” until all those questions can be answered.

She's still young - she may have been afraid of the father or her own family, shame of being pregnant, religious guilt and/or
an overwhelming denial that she was pregnant to begin with could have all contributed to this decision.

Most times, when they find a young pregnant woman who does this, the above fears and denials are almost always behind a decision to dump the problem and run. Not sociopathy. Just an overwhelming desire to pretend it never happened. She never wanted to be pregnant, she couldn't deal with the idea of being pregnant (she's just fat!), and when the birth finally happens, she gets rid of the resulting baby because being pregnant was the worst thing that could happen to her at that point in her life and she had been denying it for the past 7 to 8 months.
I knew an Avila in High School back in the 70's. She had no where to turn, and made some really bad decisions based on fear and denial.

No matter how many safe haven laws there are, if she was afraid of being kicked out of her home or being considered just another whore, she would deny ever being pregnant. The baby is little more than an unwanted doll to her.

I was shocked at how readily some were able to demand life in prison without knowing anything about this girl.

I hope the baby is okay and has a good life, in case anyone thinks I don’t care. But who has ever been there for its mother?

and being pregnant and the hormones involved can make it difficult enough with a partner and a wanted pregnancy.

I hope that she's able to get help, but it is more likely, the way that our society works, that she will be put in prison with no investigation beyond the assumption that she's a monster.

We'd best be ready to see this a lot more, as well as dead women, once the SCOTUS officially decides that all pregnancies should come to term.

Sorry, that's WAY different from "desperation" and leaving it on church steps or some other public place. She intended for the baby to die and be disposed of. That's indefensible.

Of course it was wrong for her to do this but now she is probably emotionally overwhelmed.

It seems like I recall some communities have a policy whereby newborns could be left
at a fire station with no questions asked. I don't know how widespread this policy is.
