North Carolina voters dispute Cawthorn candidacy over Jan. 6

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A group of North Carolina voters told state officials on Monday they want U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn disqualified as a congressional candidate, citing his involvement in last January’s rally in Washington questioning the presidential election outcome before a Capitol riot later that day.

Lawyers filed a candidacy challenge of the Republican on behalf of 11 voters with the State Board of Elections, which oversees a process by which a candidate’s qualifications are scrutinized. The voters contend that Cawthorn, who formally filed as a candidate for the 13th District seat last month, can’t run because he fails to comply with an amendment in the U.S. Constitution ratified shortly after the Civil War.

The 1868 amendment says no one can serve in Congress “who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress . . . to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.”

The written challenge says the events on Jan. 6, 2021 “amounted to an insurrection” and that Cawthorn’s speech at the rally supporting President Donald Trump, his other comments and information in published reports provide a “reasonable suspicion or belief” that he helped facilitate the insurrection and is thus disqualified.

My mother refers to Gosar's district as "The Nazi North"

The AB actually setup shop in Kingman, AZ about 20 years ago because they thought Kingman would be a great place to recruit.

It's the biggest reason I have never gone to Lake Havasu City.

Ones waiting to run in their sted, are even worse die-heart conspiracy/t* nutters. Also, look at who are running out school board/ election officials, and who are running in their place. Crt nonsense, confusing covid messaging fr CDC, and lack of voting rights bill are kicking our butt

I know nothing about who is on the board, are they likely to just ignore the challenge or say it has no merit?

If they do, I guess the next step might be a lawsuit against Cawthorn challenging his eligibility on constitutional grounds?

but this goes nowhere. Cawthorn hasn't even been charged by the House or DOJ for anything related to 1/6 and, regardless of his obvious complicity, that would seem a necessary step to even sow doubt over eligibility. At a minimum, a vote of the House to boot him would at least give this a chance of working. Still crossing my toes and wiggling voodoo fingers for this to go somewhere.

It's a test case. Let's see how far it goes. If it is tossed, refine strategy and try again.
