General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI formally joined DU 20 years ago today.
After lurking for several months, angry and frustrated over the impeachment of Bill Clinton, a stolen presidential election by the SCOTUS, 9/11 and fascinated by this new thing called the Internet and it's chat rooms ,I found a few thousand fellow travelers and jumped in with both feet.
Over the years I have met and enjoyed the company and true friendship of many of those I found here. Some turned out to be my neighbors and fellow community activists. Others were like minded Los Angeles and California progressives that were also looking for a place to vent as well as create a path forward. Our " meet ups " were legendary, producing more than a few people who ran for elected offices, now writers and bloggers of note. There are even a couple teenagers alive today as a result of those meet ups.
I was almost 59 years old when I began this incredible relationship and will be 79 in a couple weeks. None of us know where our journey in life will take us or who or what we'll encounter along the way , but I'm glad to have bumped into this bunch.

(66,380 posts)Twenty years have gone so fast. I wouldn't have wanted to miss a minute of it without having DU to share it with.
Congratulations!

(34,111 posts)to have known so many for so long on a political website. People come and go so quickly, says the girl from Kansas. My 20 is coming up sometime this summer. It is amazing isn't it?
Congratulations.

Another DUer had the same date (IIRC, Skittles) and it was noted we joined a couple minutes apart.
We some meet-ups in the Chicago area, back in the day, but not for a long time.
Congrats, again!

(90,708 posts)A friend of mine urged me to join, and Im so glad I came. I was in my early or mid-50s then, in what I thought of as robust middle-age.
So many here shared similar experiences of coming of age during civil rights and anti-war and political struggles and in the midst of our collective outrage in the BushCheney years one thing was certain: we thought we knew how to handle this. Our previous experiences had shown us how. And we had each other.

Hard to believe its nearly 18 years since that DU backyard meet-up in Lake Balboa (Van Nuys, to some.). I believe at least three DUers who attended that party have passed. Glad your alive and still kicking Fascist ass.
I also discovered DU a few weeks after it went online and lurked for a year until early 2002. I would have had a lot more posts, but I changed my DU name after the 2004 election.
That said, every time I make 😈 😈 🥚🥚, I think of you and the guy who went by Puerco Bellies. You gentlemen really plowed through those eggs!
Stay well, Jaysun! Things have gotten a whole lot uglier since then and we need all the DUers we can get.
Recipe:
Shitload of hard boiled eggs
Mayonnaise
Sweet pickle relish
Mustard
Curry powder (to taste)
Paprika on top

(11,856 posts)Glad to hear from you..always. I hope all is well with you and yours.
Yup, those deviled eggs of yours are still the gold standard in my book. 😆
Yes, I know of several people that attended have passed on and a couple are having some serious health problems...me included, but we all are trying to soldier on as best we can.
We may need to get the band back together if things keep going the way they are. 😥
Be well.

(1,402 posts)Me, too...........until I found DU, I had no one to voice my democratic opinions. I thank DU every day and appreciate those who are in charge and all the respondents.

Congrats, jay, and thanks, DU. I want this website to be here always.

(11,470 posts)I went to a meetup in SF once soon after I joined was living in bay area then working on Kerry campaign. I still find this is the best forum for information. I was going to say democrat information but I have learned so much more here over the years, been helped with computer problems, been comforted, had laughs, saw beautiful photography, etc.

(14,906 posts)I actually saw DU on line by accident early on - first year or two!
BUT... I was at a Netcafe [no computer at home] trying to keep up with my interests, and on line friends so it didn't stick w everything going on. Ah, well...
Then when I needed to talk about something in particular in 2018, and also be around more Democrats etc than I was getting at the off topic sub forum of a music band who also had liberal activity... I remembered DU..
I looked DU up and wow, was I surprised to see y'all's were still going strong!!! 😄💖 So I jumped in. So glad I remembered.

(3,064 posts)I lurked for quite a while before formally joining. Like many old timers I came here because of BartCop. He was a staunch supporter of DU from the beginning.
He was one righteous Okie. He fought the good fight until the end. We could sure use him now.
