After a tearful apology for her actions, a Kansas woman was sentenced Monday to two years probation and 60 hours of community service for her role in the Capitol riot.
Esther Schwemmer, of Leavenworth, also must pay $500 in restitution for damage to the Capitol building, which prosecutors say totaled $1.5 million. The sentence was handed down via video conference in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Im deeply ashamed of my actions on that day, Schwemmer told U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, her voice breaking. Nothing about it was Christ-like
I hope with time I can forgive myself.
Friedrich told Schwemmer that none of us are defined by the worst mistake we made.

(15,617 posts)Would you have preferred she and other defendants with similar charges all go to trial, draining severely limited DOJ resources away from the prosecutions of the militia members charged with felony obstruction, which can carry a terrorism sentencing enhancement, as well as the potential prosecutions of the ring of conspirators (Roger Stone, Alex Jones, Ali Alexander) with direct links to Trump, MOC, and the coup architects?
If this defendant had gone to trial and was found guilty, the most she would likely have faced would be a year in jail, I reckon.

(82,849 posts)She didn't just happen upon some demonstration while she was out for her afternoon constitutional. She intentionally and deliberately traveled from Leavenworth to Washington to get in on the mayhem. I'm glad she's ashamed of herself, but millions of Americans didn't go hundreds of miles to try to overthrown the government by force. I won't define her by her worst mistake, but a heavier punishment might deter her from trying to top herself in the future. Five hundred bucks and 60 hours of community service is remarkably indulgent.
