you can tell it's very early Bowie because he hasn't quite buffed the London vowels out of his accent.

Young David Bowie was one of a handful of songwriters who were tasked with writing English language lyrics to the French song "Comme d'habitude". Ultimately Paul Anka wrote his own lyrics, which Sinatra made famous.
Allegedly, the success of "My Way" infuriated Bowie to the point that he wrote an intense parody song based around the melody of "Comme d'habitude"....that song would become "Life on Mars?"
