The NPR interview should illustrate how he would perform. His party is terrified of how he would behave. They couldnt control his behavior in a formal debate, and they dont want that televised.

After all, when the votes are counted, Republicans run the risk of losing an election. Best to just let the RNC decide who the winner of any election is.
