Why the Left Couldn't Destroy Rahm Emanuel

Politico

After Rahm Emanuel limped to the end of two controversy-pocked terms as Chicago mayor in 2019, many people assumed he would be consigned at last to irrelevance. Some critics, especially on the Democratic left, thought a sullen fadeaway was too good for Emanuel — he deserved some place a bit hotter to spend his political afterlife.

Less than three years later, Emanuel isn’t going to oblivion. And he isn’t going to hell, or at least not yet. He’s going to Tokyo. Emanuel leaves on Saturday to begin his term as President Joe Biden’s newly-confirmed U.S. ambassador to Japan.

What gives?

At a moment when police violence against people of color has become a national emergency, Emanuel left office showered by anger over how he and the city government handled one of the country’s most notorious episodes, the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was struck by 16 bullets while he walked away from an officer.

At a moment when the left is widely touted for its new power, Biden ignored the warnings of rising stars like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about a person they think epitomizes the problems of the Democratic Party. Instead, he appointed Emanuel to represent the country to a major world power — a posting historically given to such esteemed figures as Caroline Kennedy, former Vice President Walter Mondale and former Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield.

And for that reason, I don't leap to lazy stereotypes every time someone posts an article I don't like.

Politico is a trade publications for Political professionals and politics junkees. It doesn't reach out to actual voters, so its alleged right wing bias is pointless. It runs stories on both Parties. When something gets posted that's critical of the Democrats, it's a "right wing rag". When something gets posted that's critical of the Republicans, nobody comments.

FWIW one can be highly intelligent and still be naive. Nothing wrong with that.

Take care.

Oh you’ll figure out Politico’s MO eventually.

Here’s an article that might help

“Politico compares inflation under Biden to the investigations of Trump's corporate fraud and attempted coup d'etat”

On Friday, Politico’s Playbook newsletter provided further example of the outlet’s history of engaging in dishonest both-sides narratives, as well as downplaying the ongoing threat to democracy from former President Donald Trump’s efforts to subvert the 2020 election. In this latest example, Politico has drawn false equivalencies to somehow put economic fluctuations on the same level of controversy as the near-destruction of American democracy.

but they clearly have become rather slipshod. First, they publish an article that falsely claimed Justice Sotomayor went out to dinner with Senator Schumer and others including Senator Durbin that they got from a tip that they didn't bother to do the most simple verification of (such as asking anyone working for Senator Schumer's office if it happened). And even though they found out it was wrong within a short time of having posted it, they waited an entire day to fix the error. On top of that, when they did fix the error, they misidentified Senator Schumer's wife a 2nd time (this time they called her Iris Schumer instead of Iris Weinshall). If this crew were in charge of bridge inspection we would have had to abandon Manhattan long ago.
