Biden needs to start governing via executive order. Start with student loan debt canellation.

Since Republicans and the two allies in the Democratic Senate caucus are willing to block every piece of Biden's agenda, Biden needs to start using the powers he does have to make as many changes as possible in this country. He can start with cancelling student loan debt.

I have not been in college since the 90s and was fortunate enough not to accumulate much debt. That's not the case in recent years as student loan debt has skyrocketed due to rising college costs. Women and minorities - two major components of the Democratic coalition - have been especially hard hit. The specter of debt is also an obstacle to ongoing college education.

Biden needs to wipe it all away with a stroke of his pen. I would target it for late September or early October so this action is fresh in the minds of voters in November. The people escaping the debt will greatly outnumber those pissed off by this action. This action will also serve as an economic boost as people divert their loan payments into the economy.

It's an easy win for Biden and he needs to take it.

that he can't abolish student loan debt by EO. https://www.forbes.com/sites/prestoncooper2/2021/08/30/no-biden-cant-forgive-student-loans-by-executive-order/?sh=3a195e0a3b2b EOs aren't a substitute for legislation, which is the province of Congress. They are simply directions to federal agencies how they should exercise powers already delegated to them by Congress. They can't change existing legislation or create new laws.

student loan debt cancellation. That would be like trying to put out a fire with a bucket of gasoline.
Right now people can get loads of cash through student loans. Universities know this and charge accordingly, that is how the price of education got so out of control in the first place. Now imagine what will happen to the costs if the money is basically free and universities know that. Just look at what the insurance industry has done to the medical system here.
What we actually need is a higher education system that is not profit based so people can actually afford it. That's not to even mention that it costs somewhere around 15,000 a year just for a stinking dorm room.
We could also have tax exempt education savings accounts for the same purpose to allow parents to save for their kids education, similar to 401k. If they don't spend that money on education when the time comes, then the tax applies when they withdraw it. Simple.
If we really wanted to fix this problem, that's how we would start to go about it.
the entire system as it stands is a complete mess and needs an overhaul.

I would focus on the IBR heavily... it is a good tool and should not be onerous at all

What is your plan for SLABS? Student Loan Asset-Backed Securities. Would you buy them all out?

Biden HAS cancelled or reduced Student Loan debt where he has executive authority to do so. It is not clear that he can do more without legislation, which is NOT forthcoming.
