For those rooting for Omicron to take over rural areas

Keep in mind you're rooting against many people, myself included. I'm vaxxed and boosted. I wear a mask and socially distance. That doesn't stop everything.

On December 28,2021 I had a transvaginal ultrasound. I'd had some post menopausal bleeding and sharp lower back pain. The ultrasound showed a heavy endometrial build up and a 14 cm mass on my left ovary. Blood work a few days later showed some nasty results. The suspicion? Ovarian cancer.

The hospitals are filling up with anti vaxxers who now have covid. The beds are full. This means physicians are postponing surgeries unless absolutely necessary. My hysterectomy is one if those surgeries.

I'm 47. My child lost their father six years ago to a heart attack. Rooting for Omicron is a slap in the face. It feels like people are rooting for my death and for my child to become an orphan

I have enough people in real life proving they don't give a damn on a daily basis. They throw tantrums about vaccinations, they refuse to wear masks or social distance. They make comments about "survival of the fittest". It makes me feel worthless on a regular basis.

I've been a member of DU for nearly 18 years. Please don't pile on the hatred and root for covid. It further ostracizes me in any community in general. It makes me feel that I'm not welcome and I don't belong in a community where I was once warmly welcomed.

I'm not rooting for covid to win, but at the end of the day those who triple vax vs those who don't are exponentially more likely to fend it off with limited trouble, than not. Get vaxxed and boosted and encourage everybody around you to do the same. Maga people might talk loudly against the vaccine but often if somebody close to them is convincing enough, that might do the trick.

Surgeries have been postponed, even for those who are fully vaxxed. Rooting for covid to rampage these communities means also rooting for the possible side effects, including death,of those who did what they needed and are affected by the actions of others.

I wouldn’t call my area rural but neither is it urban. However it seems like most folks around here are masked and mostly vaxxed. I don’t think anyone is rooting for omicron, they just get pissed off when they see people ignoring the warnings. Rightly so, it is very selfish. My governor issued notice that all elective and non-emergency surgeries be delayed temporarily. It does sound like ICUs are less impacted this time but I don’t think we’ve peaked yet. New infections doubled in the county past week. Also it seems that a number of new infections were caught while in the hospital for something else which is pretty discouraging.

vulnerable populations as if they don't matter. There are many people who will end up hospitalized or die from omicron because they have compromised immune systems due to cancer treatments, transplant surgery, or have diabetes, are pregnant, have AIDS, or are over 65. If you think that seniors are expendable, consider our Democratic president who is pushing 80 and our House Speaker who IS in her 80s and doing an exceptional job.

That's what the OP is saying. People who are vaxxed, boosted, younger than 65, and consider themselves in good health keep repeating that the omiclcron variant is no big deal. Well, it IS a big deal for vulnerable people. They are the vaccinated ones on respirators, dying in hospitals, along with the unvaccinated. When you discount them with claims that omicron is no big deal for the vaxxed and boosted, you are discounting them as expendable and not worth considering.

A person needing surgery is vulnerable even if vaxxed and boosted. When they are recovering from surgery, they are weak while their immune systems work overtime to repair and heal. Add a disease like covid, even if a mild case, and you overtax their immune systems.

I spoke with a local hospital nurse earlier today when I encountered her in a store. She said that they are getting vaccinated people every day to put on ventilators because they are cancer patients who would otherwise live to go in remission if covid did not exist. Some are very young. She is caring for grandmothers and grandfathers whose grandchildren will not get to know them because people are recklessly saying, "It's only omicron. Nothing to worry about if you are vaccinated and boosted." For some people, it is a LOT to worry about. But society has become callused and indifferent to them.

DU hasn't changed for the worse, it's always had an anti-rural bias. Posters feel perfectly comfortable making scathingly dismissive comments about the rural poor that they would never make about urban poor people.

We may live in the city now, but my wife grew up in poverty-stricken Appalachia. She's very attuned to the constant belittlement and derision aimed at that section of the country, blanket condemnations of all who live there.

… being refusniks and now coming down sick, coming here to DU on some days virtually feels like a betrayal.

I am angry too, and have written things here I probably shouldn’t have. But do I wish for whole groups to get sick? No.

Last I heard, the Central Valley (rural as all get-out) in California was being hit pretty hard, and their hospitals were full enough that Fresno was contacting Los Angeles about sending overflow patients to them. Needless to say, LA has its own troubles, just on a much larger scale.

I am practically numb by now. I would like to know if those military field-hospital tents could be reserved for COVID patients, so surgeons and obstetricians could get back to their own necessary jobs. There is nothing “elective” or “postponable” about the kind of surgery you need.

All the best to you and your family. May this be resolved soon.

Preach it, sister, preach it!!

I live in a deep red rural Virginia county where most folks are not wearing masks; where at the grocery or the hardware, I am mocked sometimes for wearing a mask.

My county has gone from 2-3 cases per day in early December to 11-15 per day this past week.

I'm the captain of a local volunteer rescue squad. In the past two weeks we have averaged three rescue calls per day and EVERY CALL WE HAVE RUN IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS has been "difficulty breathing," every one COVID positive, all but four admitted, some of those admitted are now in ICU or transported to medical center in Richmond.

The Republican jackasses who surround me do not need any encouragement to endanger my life.

I live in a rural area as well. While I don’t currently need surgery, I worry about unexpected health events because our hospitals are full. No matter what the problem is, everyone has to wait in the ER for 2 days. So even if you don’t have Covid when you get there, you will likely have it when (and if) you leave.

I am so sorry for your situation and hope you can get your needed surgery and have a good outcome.

it's more of an observation that these waves are regional. Cities have stricter measures for vaccines and masks and the virus is running out of new people to infect. So many predict numbers will shift to other regions. It's also seasonal with cold places in winter and warm places in summer. So many cold rural places are getting bad now.

unlike others who are mostly just inconvenienced.

Potential ovarian cancer should NOT be considered elective surgery. Tell them your heirs have directions to sue everyone responsible for this if you don't make it due to the delay. If need be, get a lawyer to follow up with a letter on letterhead.

You could also ask your insurer to send you out of network to a different hospital under these circumstances.

My provider sent me out of network when there was a year-long wait for surgery needed to protect my visiion (one doctor had left and the other was backlogged).

I hope you can get the procedure soon. I don't think anybody here wants to see vaxxed and boosted people suffer with COVID, though this is frustration against anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers.

I confess I feel less sympathy when some misinformation peddler gets their comeuppance, but even those hospitalizations and deaths are a horror for the crews who have to take care of them, and for the other patients who have to wait extra weeks for routine procedures.

Hang in there, and know you have friends in big cities who are rooting for you and your community.

It's completely gross and lacks all empathy. I've seen high fives over a teenager's accidental death because they just knew he must've been a redneck Republican with no supporting information provided.

I'd say we can do better, but this is social media. Anonymity is where the real person emerges.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I can't say I've seen people here "rooting for Omicron in rural areas" but that would surely be ridiculous. The last thing any of us need is more Covid.

From what I can see, most unvaccinated now will never change their minds about it, they've been given plenty of information and for whatever reason they have decided not to get vaxxed.

This is reality, and we are going to have to deal with it. I do predict that over the next month or two Omicron will slow down significantly, and that the restrictions on elective surgeries will be lifted, and that you will be able to get the treatment you need.

Best of luck to you. There are still plenty of good people out there. Don't forget that.

Mon Jan 17, 2022, 11:42 AM

The unvaxxed, rural, Omicron patients are filling up metro-area hospitals, too. Rural hospitals don't have the capabilities, staff, or the capacity to take care of the "sick" COVID patients, and so these patients get sent on to metropolitan hospitals that have more beds, actual ICUs and better facilities. As these metro hospitals fill up - and fill up with contagious patients, they have to cancel surgeries and other services - because 1) they can't discharge the COVID patients because they're still sick, 2) they don't have room to admit new patients and 3) even if they did have room, they can't take the risk of infecting other patients with COVID. So yeah, the tRump voters (aka, the unvaxxed) may be dying, but they're hurting others who need vital services at their own local hospitals because those who are local to those metro hospitals can't get beds.

97. After the last round of rural hate a month ago
Mon Jan 17, 2022, 01:54 PM
Jan 2022

First off I am very sorry about your medical condition and share your fear, anxiety and frustration.
As a rural health care provider I can tell you that wishing any sickness on any person is sociopath shit. Our entire clinic is ragged and bare boned tired. Omicron is coming and we are prepping but the Flu has ravaged our clinic and community now. We are tired, and sick

Regarding DU, after the last round of rural hate on DU, I had to take a break. I came back yesterday to see that post and thread and was outraged all over again. DUers HATE rural folks sick or healthy. Even EarlG was kicking us around which is why I left and am leaving for good. Rural voters are not welcomed here, his message was clear to me. Don’t bother recruiting them to our party was his message also. Not smart, hey.

I have decided with certainty that while the internet is full of snark, snide and hatred, DU is full of some of the most hate-filled and chronically unhappy people. Worse than the other side even. I had been a member here since 2003. It’s simply not worth it anymore. It’s not a healthy place. Cheering illness on other folks is literally a hatful and unhealthy thing

Regarding rural voters: Hillary Clinton won the Bronx and Manhattan by about a million votes, which was more than enough to win the important states she lost. I know she would have handled COVID better but COVID is causing a change in our economy and lifestyle. Folks are moving out of the city now. Smart move IMO
Be careful whom you cast your digressions on folks

Mon Jan 17, 2022, 02:21 PM
Jan 2022

We learn as we live. I'm one who posted with the "poor white trailer trash" sometime back. I deeply regret that. It will never happen again, and was never meant to include everyone living in a trailer or manufactured home.

I grew up using the N word liberally, but I always looked around to be sure there wasn't anyone of color nearby that might kick the shit out of me for my ignorance. We grew up calling each other queers, or faggots...until I realized that was just more ignorance from an era that needs to be buried deep.

I'm also one who has disparaged the South, and blanketed everyone living there as worth less. I have learned and cut all of that out of my present. I'm sorry for those mistakes in my past, but it is my past.

As for wishing omicron or Covid in general to strike rural America with a vengeance, I never wanted that, but I did see a "silver lining" in hearing about the vocal anti vaxxers get taken down. I never considered their families and loved ones, nor the impact it makes on the medical communities across the world. I'm sorry for that calloused attitude as well.

Thanks for sharing your story. I wish you all the best, and hope you can get that elective surgery soon. I experienced postponing two elective surgeries myself until just recently because of Covid. My wife is in the very same situation as you, but she is reluctant to deal with it.

DU is a place to vent AND learn. I've learned a lot here. I'm learning more every day I read the threads. We make mistakes as humans. We learn from them. I know I have and continue to.

A burger here or there, xmas prime rib is about all. we prefer pigs, goats and chicken. Fish and a huge family garden every summer.
Sounds ideal right?
Please understand, it takes some 4or 5 individuals approximately 65 hours a week each to maintain. In addition to the "real job" of 36 to 45 hours a week doing whatever. Cooks, sawyers, welders and administrative types all make up our ranks.

I hope you are able to find another hospital that will perform the surgery even if it means another state. If you need resources, consider a go-fund-me for help. I know people would help.
