First, I would like to thank everyone who submitted an entry. We definitely have very talented photographers here on DU.
Second, I would like to thank everyone who voted and/or viewed the contest thread. As photographers, we always appreciate a pat on the back.
First and Second Photos were separated by one vote. Yes, it was a difficult contest with so many amazing submissions.
Here are the top three photographs
First place:
HappyCynic
Fog and Flow

Second place:
Grumpy Old Guy
Sunset At Hot Creek

Third place:
Tom Kitten
Willamette Falls, the end of the Oregon Trail

Honorable mention chosen by me because I really like the photo is:

(8,873 posts)has got all the depth and moody atmospherics that Turner used to put on canvas, after hours and days of work. And HC got it in a second. The almost-bests are almost as good. Great work, everybody!

(23,087 posts)Sometimes we are in just the right spot at just the right time with a good camera.
But, in my little trials, I've slogged through an awful lot of less-than mediocre spots, conditions, timing. Still - keep that shutter shuttering. Never know when something will grab the feelings.

(8,873 posts)Being in the right spot when the moment arrives takes time too.

(156,297 posts)It was a tough contest. I saw tie votes more than once, and was not surprised.
Thank you, my dear Callalily, for running such a great contest! And to everyone who participated too.

(4,254 posts)I watched the lead go back and forth several times. What more can one ask for in a competition? It kept me on the edge of my seat. 😉 Congratulations to HappyCynic, Tom Kitten and all the other entrants. This was a good one.
Thanks also to Callalily for running a great contest.

(22,668 posts)to the winners. The photos were so beautiful all the way through! The winner was a huge favorite from the start, they all were really. Congratulations to all who entered, to HappyCynic Grumpy Old Guy and Tom Kitten especially.
Will now remind Happy Cynic of his prize: he gets to pick the theme for the February Contest, which I will be in charge of very soon.

(22,336 posts)I don't know who submitted that one, but I'd love to know where it was taken.
Unrelated, but at the moment I'm kind of freaking out, because I just now noticed the person in the pink jacket popping up over the end of the barge. I've looked at the picture multiple times before, of course, but never noticed that. Now that I've noticed, I had to keep scrolling back up to look to make sure I wasn't imagining things.
The human mind, what it notices and doesn't, is an amazing thing!

(1,416 posts)Every entry was great! My personal favourite is Grumpy Old Guy's Sunset at Hot Creek, though I loved all the finalists and many of the fantastic photos that didn't make it to the finals.
In case anyone is wondering, I photographed Fog and Flow at Capilano Suspension Bridge, West Vancouver, BC, Canada.

(4,254 posts)Did you have as much fun as I had seeing how close it was? I was checking the vote every hour or two. 🤣 Your shot really is great. I could just picture myself on that bridge watching the fog drift through. Great composition and mood.
My photo was captured at Hot Creek Geological Site, not far from the Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort in California. It's a popular location for West Coast photographers, but most folks shoot it from the top of the canyon. By dumb luck I hiked to the bottom, and was able to catch the marvelous reflections in the creek.

(4,254 posts)Do you think that person lived in that barge?
Soph0571
(9,685 posts)You can tell the barge livers from the one week on the river dwellers. I posted a pick up above from another angle on her. She was moving her 'house'.
Grumpy Old Guy
(4,254 posts)However, common sense took over, and I bought a house instead.

(15,325 posts)I'm so glad that you entered the barge photo in the contest. Great composition, fabulous colors and tons and tons of interest. All the makings of a fabulous photo.

I lived within five miles of those falls most of my life but only got the opportunity to see them from that spot shortly before I moved away.
