Man admits to enslaving worker and making him live in a garden shed for 40 years with no light or heatingPeter Swailes and the shed where his victim was kept, according to police
The Evening Standard reported that authorities rescued the enslaved man from the shed after an anonymous tip-off.
The authorities found the man, then 58, in a dark shed without lights or a heating source. GLAA officers said the shed was "in complete darkness" when they went to rescue the man.
The enslaved worker, who is now in his 60s, told UK law enforcement he spent his days doing painting and slating work on farms for the two Swailes men for around $13.60 a day.
Officers from the GLAA noted as well that another shed, where the Swailes family dog slept in, was "in a far better state" than the quarters provided for the worker.
The rescued worker is now living in government-supported accommodation, per the GLAA.

(25,999 posts)Care to condemn an entire state some more? Perhaps the entire tier of southern states? Never pass up an opportunity, even when the state you mention has fuck-all to do with this story.

Why did you even have to bring a US state into this discussion?

(448 posts)Segway into what red states would like to have again. Also, the British never fought a war to retain their servants. Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

(7,737 posts)It's your egotistical desire to write about Southern states.
I am a 7th generation Southerner. I like it down here- and I am well aware of the issues the region faces. Most of us are.

(448 posts)Maybe some consideration of the feelings of others may be a good cure for this anger and hostility in this discussion. I love you just the way you are and I'm glad that you have such strong southern roots. Maybe you could help teach those of us outside of the region about how the south really is and not the portrayal that is seen on the MSM. Can we please play nice now? Please? (Hugs)

(25,999 posts)Where was YOUR consideration for the feelings of others when you knee-jerked a condemnation of Alabama into the conversation? Sounds like youve got hostility issues of your own to deal with. Dont ignore that beam in your eye.
Oh, BTW, you assumed I have southern roots because I dont like regional bashing. I speak out when I see any group bashed gratuitously - region, gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, whatever. You dont like being called out for that, theres a simple solution: just dont do it.

(26,158 posts)And, seriously? You look at the mess Britain left all over the world from their Empire, and say this??? No mention of how they allowed slavery in the Caribbean? Or how they sent poor people to the literal opposite end of the Earth for stealing bread to eat, with no way back?
Like others, I am done with the attack on Southerners on this board. Fucking DONE with it.

(25,999 posts)Theres blatant chauvinism based on socioeconomic class, age, appearance, religion - for starters. I want to break the cycle of back-slapping affirmation following these posts, and if it leads to my banishment, well, maybe I dont belong where that shit is considered acceptable discourse.

(25,999 posts)This has gone on for far too long on this site, and I will call it out when I see it. Its nothing personal. Its embarrassing to see self-proclaimed liberals, progressives, and Democrats of any kind engage in chauvinistic soft bigotry like name-dropping a lesser state when someone deplorable is discovered across the country or halfway around the world. Its a form of what-aboutism that is most unbecoming.

(101,390 posts)The British system has been pretty awful at dropping all support for a child once they reach the age beyond which they can't live in a council home for children, or in council-arranged foster care. At that age (born around 1960), he may well have had an unmarried mother who was persuaded to give him up, and he was then never adopted (other articles describe the victim as 'vulnerable', which probably means he had learning difficulties, which also explains why he didn't get free for 40 years; that might have made him not wanted for adoption).

The man and his apprentice monster should never have been allowed to gain power over this bewildered and helpless man. What a nightmare. What kind of fiend would not feel sickened by what they did to him?
So glad someone found him.

Man, 80, accused of modern slavery dies before trial
21 September 2021
A 80-year-old man has died awaiting his trial for exploiting a man found living in a garden shed in Cumbria.
Peter Swailes senior and his son, 55-year-old Peter Swailes junior, both denied modern slavery offences ahead of their trial in January 2022.
Their alleged victim, in his 50s, was discovered at a residential site north of Carlisle in October 2018.
Investigators believed the alleged victim could have been living in the shed for up to 40 years.
