so, what is the whitest possible sport?

Last edited Wed Jan 19, 2022, 02:34 PM - Edit history (2)

In the past, golf and tennis used to be pretty darn white, but nowadays if we want a really white sport, it had better be something involving snow or ice. So the obvious nominees are:

- hockey
- speed skating
- figure skating
- bobsled/luge/skeleton
- downhill skiing
- cross-country skiing

...but in my opinion, the best nominee is the one that combines skis with guns, WINTER BIATHLON. Now that's white.

[woops, forgot curling!]

Just three months after that first Learn to Curl class, they were playing at the state level. Within 10 months, they were asked to represent the Wine Country Curling Club in competition by its president (and their trainer) Bob Kuhl. They’ve played in invitation-only tournaments—they’re called “bonspiels”—that pit them against international champions and curling veterans with 20 or 30 years of experience behind them, encountering other Black curlers only once or twice. They are very likely the only consistent two-member team of Black women playing the sport. Even when they pair up with other duos to create four-person teams, Moore and Stephenson make it very clear that it’s important for them to always play together as teammates. “Some amazing barriers are being opened. We’re history in the making. Even us just being in California is historic,” said Stephenson. “Almost all of the curlers that compete like we do are from icy states: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alaska. Here we are—Cali baby.” Last year, Team Moore and Stephenson medaled for the first time and, because they’re top competitors, they did it twice, placing second in the California competition and third in the Arena National Championships. Now they’re vying for spots on the High-Performance Program—or “the HPP team”—which is basically the NBA of curling and focused on building the momentum to qualify for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. “Our ultimate goal is to be able to represent the US in international competition,” Stephenson added, “and that includes aspiring to win our national and world competitions so that we can wear Team USA on our backs.”

68. What is the purpose of the question?
Wed Jan 19, 2022, 03:12 PM
Jan 2022

Sports are typically considered "White" because they had historically excluded people of color, either explicitly (as in No Blacks Allowed) like in the early days, to the 1940's in Baseball, the early days of Basketball, Swimming, etc... OR they excluded by other means typically financial and then the "culture" aspect again, you can point to the exclusion of Black people from municipal swimming pools as a reason why there are so few Black swimmers in the United States.

When you talk about "Snow" sports, well then geographical differences in skin color come into play. There is little snow, where the people of the world have the darkest skin color. That is just a fact of geography and biological analogs. Certainly there are Black and Brown people who ski, but you don't see high numbers because in areas of the world where people have dark skin, there is very little snow. Add to that, it is expensive to learn to ski so people who have not been exposed to the sport as a part of growing up in a country where it is popular, or in a family that is amenable and able to afford to participating.

Also, how are we defining White here? I am considered "White" as part of the Census, though I have never and would not ever consider myself as White.

Yes, if by speed-skating you mean that silly roller derby on ice called "Short Track" where everybody rides in a pack, the guy in front falls - taking down everybody right behind him - and the guy in the back wins as the last man upright. Stupid sport.

Real speed skating involves two participants in separate lanes over distance, and that's dominated by northern Europeans, the Dutch in particular.
