Almost lost my husband.

Last Saturday morning he hit a patch of black ice here in Mpls on Hwy 100. His truck ricochet off barriers on both the passenger side and drivers side. Then went airborne UPSIDE DOWN over a fence, rolled, and landed upright on a service road. He had a sore neck and a few bruises. Amazing. Truck is scary to see. I am so thankful.

12. No, State Farm insurance has been great to deal with.

Because used vehicles are so high priced, insurance is paying him 30% higher than Blue Book for the truck that was totaled. We are going to wait to purchase a replacement vehicle because I have other cars to use until inflated pricing due to shortages gets back to normal.

Imagine motoring down a familiar stretch of dry road - with absolutely no concerns or misgivings whatsoever - when, with absolutely no warning or any visible cues at all - all of a sudden the rear end of your vehicle is trying to change places with the front. Instant panic. Ice water dread, while your heart leaps out of your throat. Very little you can do about it - except don't go near the brakes, and pray if there is time. You and fickle fate have entered the twilight zone. And you are in SO much more trouble than just driving on ice or snow. Good luck!

she had rolled the car she normally drove instead of my new one with airbags and power driver's seat. (I think personally that the power seat is locked down better than a manual one. But that's just me)

48. I've heard that also - seat belts help a lot more than people would imagine.

Especially in a roll-over. Most accidents are just a sudden stop and the belt keeps passengers from hitting the dashboard. Just like the vaccine, seat belts do a great job at mitigating injury and death in non-fatal accidents. In most wrecks, the belt can be the difference between less serious torso injuries as opposed to facial impact with the steering wheel or dashboard resulting in loss of consciousness, head/skull/neck injuries, and teeth being knocked out.

I've read that modern cars are surprisingly protective in an accident so long as riders can remain in their seats during impact, which is pretty impossible during a roll without a seat belt. Even if you survive a roll, remaining conscious during the minute after the accident is critical, and that is less likely if you're thrown loose around a rolling car interior.

I discovered that the chin rest (which was new and made of ebony) had broken (!) and the bridge fell over and the
sound post inside the box had collapsed... I always think that this could have happened to my spinal cord.

Black ice is pretty insidious because it is nearly invisible and often caused by freezing water vapor from exhaust systems.

37. That is terrifying (I know from a similar situation with my wife). I'm so glad he walked away!

One time about 15 years ago, a huge semi was at a light at the two lane on-ramp to the Autobahn. He was in the left lane. My wife was in her car in the right lane. The truck was so high up, he didn't see her in the right lane. When the light changed, the truck turned right, and into the right lane, thinking there was no one in it. He never heard his truck crushing my wife's car beneath him. He only stopped after he noticed he was encountering an obstruction. My wife was screaming, but the truck driver heard nothing. She scrambled at the last second over to the passenger door and fled out of it while she still could. The front of her car was crushed. Even today, she gets cold chills when a semi pulls up next to her.

Sometimes the Great Spirit decides to smile on you. It sounds like both our spouses were so fortunate--and in turn, so were we.

43. One driving trick for driving on ice......

First off anything over 30mph on ice is dangerous. If you have a FWD vehicle (might also apply to 4x4) and
loose steering, turn steering wheel all the way as far as it goes in the direction you need to go and mash
the gas pedal to the floor for a split second, let off, repeat as often as necessary. Every time you rev the
engine and let off, it'll pull you a little in that direction. Keeping your foot on the gas pedal will not help, you
have to get the front tires spinning and let off, and repeat as necessary. If you find this confusing, ask me a ?

There is no 4 wheel vehicle out there that can properly navigate a large patch of black ice.

One slight breeze or deviation an it is all as you describe.

My dad had a similar accident when I was in college.
He was driving his semi on an interstate overpass with retaining walls when the front left wheel came off the truck. (State cop witnessed it.)
Slammed into the wall twice trying to yank it back, but the 3rd time he ran out of wall.
Truck went over on its side.
He had 2 cracks in his right knee cap & some bumps, bruises & sore muscles.
It was a truck full if milk being driven to the supermarkets. He pulled himself out the passenger side window, when let himself to the ground he was knee deep in milk!
Cop who saw it happen called ambulance, and put him in the car to stay off his led.
Wore a cast for about 6 weeks, but was ok overall.
