Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled the outline of a proposed Parental Bill of Rights that would give parents and not schools the right to decide if a student should repeat a grade.
Why it matters: Abbott said he wants to amend the Texas Constitution to make parents the main decision makers in all matters involving their children, which mirrors a national push from conservatives fueled by contentious battles over how race and sexuality are addressed in public schools.
What theyre saying: Texas parents have every right to know what their children are being taught, Abbott said during a campaign stop at a charter school in Lewisville.
A card outlining this new Bill of Rights was handed out at the campaign stop and posted to Twitter by WFAA reporter Teresa Woodard.

(16,159 posts)Children who live in toxic households, especially kids who are unsure of their gender identity or sexuality, may only have an opportunity to understand who they are at school.
Except for my younger daughter's fourth grade teacher (who was horrible!!!), I never interfered in my kids' education. I'm not a trained educator. That doesn't mean that I didn't stay engaged and involved, but it was not my job to tell the teachers how to teach.

I mean, low taxes and all that, I get it, but if you're a company operating in TX...
- Are your including travel pay to out of state for women of childbearing age employees in the event they want to exercise their Constitutional Rights?
- Are your planning to import educated workers, or are you hiring the "sacks of hammers" TX Schools are going to create if they continue down this road?
- Will you employ LGBTQ workers, or minorities?
- How about firearms training so your employees can defend themselves against every concealed carry nut job in the state?
- Will your insurance cover medical costs when one of your LGBTQ workers gets the snot beat out of them for being LGBTQ?
- What will you say to your employees whose kid gets the shit beat out of them because they are different? "Just Don't Say Gay"???
Are tax breaks worth it?
Look, it's pretty fucking simple
"None of this will ever change. The racism, fascism, misogyny, hatred and white supremacy...NONE OF IT will change, unless and until we make racism, fascism, misogyny, hatred and white supremacy unprofitable to the corporations that fund it, and the people that enable it."
If you have looked at the political landscape in Texas, or Georgia, or West Virginia, or South Carolina, or Indiana, or Ohio, or Florida, and you've said; "thank you sir, may I have another", then you have shown what you are.
I remember that some big corporations were so outraged about the Georgia Voter Suppression Laws.
They were "outraged" all the way up until those laws passed, and 2 DAYS LATER, THEY WENT BACK TO DONATING TO THE POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS THAT PASSED THOSE LAWS!!!
Guess what? As long as it is profitable for corporations to support racism and fascism, they will continue to support racism and fascism.

(1,459 posts)I am talking about how they message it, not that they should back it.
Look at Virginia election, and look at the ads out about politicians, and school board members thinking they are the ones that should decide how our children are educated. We know that teachers are the experts, its just a matter of how we message that fact.
Republicans are, somewhat successfully, portraying Democrats as the party that want to eliminate parents voices when it comes to how their kids are educated. And that is not a pretty look to many parents.
Democrats must figure out a way to get their message across without coming across as authoritative.
