(64,324 posts)and our Navy is kind of a proxy for them to keep the sea lanes in the South China Sea open for all.
China is getting agressive, has been for quite a few years. Much like in Europe, we need to work with our allies.

(6,352 posts)While we could defend Taiwan and prevent China from evading, etc, we have to consider for how long we want to do it, what the long term costs would be and what it would do to our relationship with China. And what it might do to our economy and supply chain. If you are in an escalated situation with China do you continue to import goods from China (that would be weird).
I think we would/will initially defend Taiwan but then we will pivot to a negotiated end based on some billshit of partial sovereignty that China will never honor. But the point of the whole thing will be that we made them negotiate with us.
Everyone--except Taiwan--walks away happy.
