I’m curious.

Also curious about this apparent “communist takeover.”

Certainly not in Europe, so who cares if a dictator invades.

Then it was the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. I always write Ukraine, but at my age, I sometimes think of it as The Ukraine. Yeh, I don't think of Russia anymore as being a true communist country.

so the use with the definite article sort of made sense, from Russia's point of view, and it was common in English during the Soviet Union. But the Ukrainian people felt it seemed like "the borderland of Russia", so they preferred it to be dropped after their independence.

"The Lebanon" also dropped the article, a bit earlier, I reckon. Why it used to be there for that country, I don't know.

And please, no WW2 appeasement comparisons.

I don’t think we have fought a war worth dying for in my lifetime. The only possible exception might be the Afghan War. And even then, once Bin Laden was dead it was time to go home.

That’s a country between Russia and China whose borders are constantly changing.

The communists are taking it over and all your children will die there.

Any more questions? No? Good.

Humans have done a lot of horrible stuff throughout history just to get a temporary feel-good to lift themselves out of depression and to forget reality.

I suspect that's exactly what Putin is trying to do for all his minions, along with stirring up fear and division in the West.

along with SlenderMan. Too old? All of T. Roosevelt's 5 sons served in the army in WWI and 4 in WWII - one was killed in action in the first war. And they were no spring chickens: by the time WWII rolled around they were in their 40s and 50s.

Although given the Trumps' love of Putin, they'd be more likely to join in on the Russian side.
