Today I think of the cousins, uncles, and aunts who did not leave Belarus with my grandparents in 1903. They faced the famines and tortures of Stalin, and were then marched to the camps by Hitler...never to return.

This horror happened but eight years before I was born. My family tree is asymmetrical. My paternal ancestors were murdered and lost to history.

We can not forget how goddamn easy it was to normalize this genocide carried out by people convinced that their actions were a rational choice...With the asserted approval of their God.

The horror is way too common. Kosovo, Rwanda, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, North America...All were killing fields in relatively recent times.

The realisation that WW2 ended only nine years before I was born became more.... influential? Pertinent? I'm not sure what the description is.

I lived in Scotland and England until we migrated in 1965. I remember DPs (Displaced Persons) in our town, and seeing their tattoos.

....for most post-war refugees. Many fanned out across the country, but just as many stayed in New York.

In our Brooklyn neighborhood we had several people with numbers tattooed on their arms. At 9 years old we moved to a Jewish neighborhood in Queens, and there too were refugees from the camps.

18. I've seen this a number of times over the years. Gets to me every time. Sir Nicholas Winton....

....died several years ago. He was ONE HUNDRED SIX years old. I'm sure a decade or two were added to his life for the way he lived his life.
