(26,262 posts)etc. And they can't blame democrats either (or independents). All of the reasonable people, those in the know, etc. advocate safety, and masks and vaccines.
And what's more, think of the negative impacts to their families, to their friends, etc. too (the unnecessary COVID deaths).
2000 deaths a day.
Wow.
I wondered how many were dying because of their idiot beliefs, this is the first estimate I've seen total-wise of COVID death impacts and to be frank, it's not surprising (but it's sad).
Perhaps we'll see the impact in the 2022 elections? Some of the elections then in 2020 were pretty close in some states, and perhaps this is why trump is pushing all of a sudden for his 'crowd' to get the vaccinations, etc. He's rec'd some intelligence on the total impact of his former stance on not getting the vaccinations, and what's happened is that his former stance has pushed any kind of margins in (if he runs again) his favor further away.

(1,718 posts)But of course they will.
How often have you heard: Why hasnt Biden ended COVID? coming from someone unvaccinated, maskless, and standing way too close?
SWBTATTReg
(26,262 posts)since it's very obviously that it's not Pres. Biden's fault, especially trying to pin Inflation on Biden (yeah, right, he just got into office and has yet to implement any policy changes etc. to really effectively change anything. And the list goes on and on them trying to blame him/Pres. Biden for everything. These efforts are falling flat on their faces.

(21,898 posts)And the reality is, is that there are a lot of people on the right who are choosing to ignore the fact that we have a vaccine... That virus's mutate... That virus's spread... That this virus can kill you... Fuckin-A, they ignore the fact that we are closing in on a million Americans dead from the virus. They look at a place like Australia that has a bit less then 3,500 deaths and they shake in fear about their freedom to die.
These people are fuckin nuts. They are willfully denying science and reality and paying for it with their lives. I don't give one shit what anyone says... They are committing suicide and in my view, perpetuating their fantasy of some type of great struggle for FREEDOM!!!! Well... That is perpetuating fantasy and I will not do that.
I'll stay in the real world, thanks.

(11,767 posts)Civil War implies factions attacking each other. It does not imply one side choosing to forsake safety precautions and dying as a result of believing propaganda.
There is a deep divide in the US but calling it a Civil War reveals no truth and no fact to the situation as it stands.

It's insane!

(11,767 posts)What will end up happening is that conservatives, who are the ones that are forgoing the preventative care, will continue dying at a higher rate. That will decrease the voter base for the Republican Party. Eventually they will not be able to mount electoral strategy even with their dirty tricks. The pendulum will swing back and better policy under Democratic leadership will prevail, at least for awhile.
I am sure that the millions upon millions suffering from the Great Depression and witnessing the riots in the USA, and revolutions around the world thought things were coming apart too. Then we got a good 40 years of Democratic control of government and managed to pull out of the problems.

(12,533 posts)But not without a lot of damage, pain and death.
I'd like to think we could avoid catastrophe by simply being a little smarter, more aware of the past and with a keener sense for risk and danger on a massive scale.
But perhaps, that's not in our nature. At least not yet.
(sigh)

(11,767 posts)By control, I don't mean become like the Vulcans in Star Trek. I mean that we learn to step back and make decisions based on information and reason, not based on fear, anger, and hatred as we often do.
You are absolutely correct. We lost thousands and thousands to starvation, violence, suicide, and illness during those times. We suffered through a world war.
We should definitely learn from history. The problem is, as we see in recent news is that the "history" we teach is bullshit. It is mythology not history. We don't learn because of "American Exceptionalism". People bought into Ronald Reagan's bullshit about "never needing to apologize" which has lead to this decline.
The pendulum typically swings back and forth, but you are totally right, it usually involves a lot of pain.

(33,424 posts)In the earliest weeks of the pandemic, Chicagos Black residents were dying of COVID-19 at alarming rates. More recently, in the few weeks since the arrival of the Omicron variant, Black Chicagoans are again dying at much higher rates than their Asian, Latino and white counterparts, according to a WBEZ analysis of data on COVID-19 related deaths from the Cook County medical examiners office.
Since Dec. 7, 2021, the date when the states first Omicron case was found in Chicago, the citys Black residents are dying at rates four times higher than Asians, three times higher than Latinos and nearly two times higher than white residents, according to WBEZs analysis. A total of 97 Black Chicagoans died of COVID-19 during the seven-day period ending Jan. 9 more than at any point since May 11, 2020.

(40,365 posts)An article published April 6, 2021, 7:00 a.m. ET
"Study finds Black women are dying from COVID-19 at three times the rate of both White and Asian men
Despite broad understanding that more men are dying of COVID-19, Black women in the United States are dying at a higher rate than any other group other than Black men, according to a new study published Monday. The analysis, which researchers say is the first to examine the race and gender of those dying from COVID, has spotlighted some of the gaps in data and research into what is causing disparities.
This analysis complicates the simple narrative that men are dying at greater rates of COVID-19 than women, Tamara Rushovich, Harvard doctoral candidate and lead author of the study, said in a statement.
The study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine by Harvard GenderSci Lab, found that Black women are dying of coronavirus at three times the rate of both White and Asian men in Georgia and Michigan. Black men had far higher mortality rates than any other race or gender group."
