(13,494 posts)- CNN Business, May 19, 2020:
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/19/media/spotify-joe-rogan-exclusive/index.html
Spotify announced Tuesday that it signed "The Joe Rogan Experience" for a multi-year exclusive licensing deal. The talk show-style podcast is anchored by comedian Joe Rogan, whom some consider controversial for peddling conspiracy theories with guests like Alex Jones. The podcast is ranked the second most popular in the United States on Apple Podcasts, according to Podcast Insights, and Rogan topped Forbes' 2020 list of the highest-earning podcasters.
The deal is the latest move in Spotify's effort to expand beyond a music streaming service to become an audio empire. In 2019, Spotify made its ambitions known by acquiring podcast companies Gimlet Media, Anchor and Parcast. In February, Spotify bought The Ringer, Bill Simmons' sports and culture site that boasts more than than 30 podcasts.

SiriusXM Relaunches Neil Young Radio, a Day After His Music Was Removed From Spotify
By Jem Aswad
Wasting no time in the wake of Neil Youngs decision to remove his music from Spotify to protest the anti-vaccine views expressed on Joe Rogans podcast on the service, SiriusXM has relaunched Neil Young Radio, a satellite and streaming music channel featuring music and exclusive stories from Neil Young.
Following its launch in December as a limited-run channel, Neil Young Radio now returns to its limited engagement slot on SiriusXMs Deep Tracks, channel 27, for 7 days starting today, and for a month streaming on the SXM App.
SiriusXM hosts multiple conservative radio shows that espouse views similar to or more outspoken than Rogans particularly on SiriusXM Patriot channel, which features Sean Hannity, Breitbart News, Andrew Wilkow and others however, satellite radio is covered by different broadcast licenses than streaming services and a rights-holder would not be able to prevent its music from being broadcast. Streaming services host content at the discretion of the rights holder; since Warner Music holds the rights to Youngs music, he had to request the company remove his catalog from Spotify.
According to the announcement, SiriusXMs Young channel will include rarities and exclusives, every new song from his latest album Barn, epic hits and fan favorites from his solo music, collaborations with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby Stills Nash & Young, plus Neil sharing the insights behind writing and recording the music.

(11,767 posts)Because it is so new, it isn't clear if they are saying "You can't" or they are saying "We are so inundated with traffic, that we can't get to everything right now".
You are right though. If Spotify doesn't get a handle on this quickly, it will result in liability for them.

(12,744 posts)This is from yesterday, and it's because their system is overwhelmed, not that they are not permitting subscribers to cancel, just that they are getting swamped and can't process them quickly.

(11,780 posts)And they will cancel their ties with them. A company that does business over the internet cant survive if that happens. I had some BS charge show up recently and I put in a claim with my CC and said I wanted the money refunded. Got an email less than a day later that Id been refunded and my subscription had been cancelled. I never had to explain myself to anyone. I suspect I wasnt the first. These places that try to give you an ongoing subscription after a small one time charge are rampant.

Music is the messenger.
If anyone knows that, it's the musicians of that era.
Oh ya, bring Sprinsteen along for the grand finale of the full circle Rockin in the Free World Tour.
Thanks
"In 100 years, people will be playing Neil Young's music. Musicians will perform his songs. His recordings will be important pieces of the cultural record. Whereas Joe Rogan will merely be gone and forgotten. So, I suspect, will Spotify." ~ tom watson

(19,919 posts)Last time I knew anyway. Crosby's ego and motor mouth has eroded many old friendships over the years.
The split between the two happened when Crosby insulted Neil's girlfriend (Daryl Hannah) and Neil went ballistic and basically told Crosby to fuck off. Steven Stills recently made semi-amends with Crosby after years of icy silence.
Being a friend of David Crosby seems to have a shelf life. He can be a real prick. Maybe this is a backhanded overture to patching up the break with Young?

Just had a new thermostat installed. I don't know how to work it. One of my granddaughters controls it from an application on her phone. Vinyl has a richer sound to it. Remember how we tried to get the best speakers for it and settings for base, etc.?
By comparison, CDs sound tinny.
LoisB
(12,320 posts)Thank you. One of the greatest sounds (musically) I have ever heard is Tina Turner singing River Deep, Mountain High on vinyl. Phil Spector's "wall of sound" coupled with Tina's voice - WOW! I really turn up the volume for that one.
Don't know if you want to bother but I believe Target sells record players. I have three 78s but no way to play them.
wnylib
(25,355 posts)But the little ones that are sold today don't have the quality of sound that the old stereo and quad sounds had with adjustments for treble and base. To buy one of that quality now would not be worth it to me for the few vinyl albums that I have.

(12,516 posts)Lets boycott Sirius, they have lots of right wing crap. Even Fox, lets cut all cables to TV, Fox, OAN and News Max, lets burn our dishes, Fox News Max, endless Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Baker, and Jesus 24/7, Never watch anymore Fox Sports Channels, lets never watch local TV again, most are Fox owned, Boycott Swanson dinners to cancel Tuckero Rose, anybody playing Clapton cancel em, burn your TVs, and Radios, Apple still plays Clapton and Kid Rock, cancel em, burn all Apple equipment.
I love Neil, admire his stance, Manlow never listen to em. Not gonna cancel Spotify. Love my music and access to endless music and lyrics. Fuck Joe Rogen, never been there never will. Not gonna cancel Sirius and their Progressive shows because of the other shit they carry. Damn sure not gonna allow right wing nuts to dictate what media I will use. Casual listeners of music, do not use all the amazing things offered from Spotify. My phone is a Mobile juke box to me, the primary use of my phone. I have Apple as well. Just like Spotify more. I donate every fund raising time Free Speech TV needs it. 4 times annually. That is my way to fight Rogen. Im gonna keep on rocking on MY hikes, XC skiing, with my 3 years of searching and hand selecting my playlists. Boycott Jesus, many many churches are pushing anti Vax shit and lies. Support all you canceling and feeling proud, just not gonna join in. Disappointed in Spotify stance, maybe you guys will get em to remove the ass hole. Mean while, my Playlist when I play live, is loaded with never heard of artists to most. BY the way, I never tweet, no account, and never had a Facebook page. Thats my contribution to not spread bullshit.

By still contributing to pos company like Spotify you really don't mean what you say.

(12,516 posts)My 3 dollars a Month is not supporting Putin. You Cancel everything that carries Tucker, anything Fox. Like I said, I give to Free Speech TV every 3 months, do not do Twitter or Face book. So if me listening to Music make me Russian, too bad. I served this country 8 years, and your idiotic attack insults me. I cancel Christianity, lies and anti Vax. Many many liberal people work at Spotify, they are not pro Putin. As dumb as burning books and Albums because it pushes something you dont like. Fuck Rogen, I care less. People that wanna hear the shit will find it wherever it is. Are you on Face Book and Twitter. That make you much more pro Putin than me streaming music. And Boycott what you want, I will do the same. I never said I condemn those that do. Actually support their choice. Just aint gonna cancel Spotify for tha asshole. Nyet!!!

Given how cable news is funded (hey, pharma!), and the slavish devotion to it by the Twitterati, I find stuff like this kind of amusing.
"I shall cancel Spotify!" *posted from my phone made by slave labor in my pajamas sewn by children* It's literally the least you can do. The very least.
Given the music industry and those who populate it, there's a lot of not great people on these services. I'm just sayin', Chris Brown is still chuggin' along. Where's that campaign?
I'm always fascinated, though, about how the seeding of social media works. How one thing can become The Thing for a moment. Until next week when there's this New Thing. And we must all care about that for as long as the attention span holds out.
Did everyone see American chocolate companies are getting sued for using slave labor? Of course not, because the take away this week on Twitter is the new ad campaign. Sharp cookies over there. Always got their fingers on the pulse of important shit.

(12,046 posts)The point is Joe Rogan sends out a podcast to 11 million people every day spewing false anti-vax ideology. Spotify provides the platform for this and pays multimillions to do it. Neil Young has forced spotify to take a stand on the issue and people can adjust their spending accordingly if they GAF which you evidently do not.
