(81,133 posts)That would have been amazing to see so many Irish private boats stand up to the Russian navy.
If Putin had fired on one of the boats, there would have been severe international outrage.

(3,334 posts)The Russian diplomat talked to the fishermen and the problem went away. It was no big deal.

(3,334 posts)The fishermen didn't want the Russian navy practicing where they fish. The Russian diplomat talked to them and agreed with them.

(58,250 posts)Today, Putin caved. That's a big deal.
It shows Putin cannot take the glare of bad PR. It's a good lesson for the future in handling the murderous kleptocrat.
marie999
(3,334 posts)I am sure he talked to the diplomat again and decided on what was the best way to handle the situation.
SunSeeker
(58,250 posts)Did you read the story at the link? Yesterday, Putin rejected any buffer zone. Today, he accepted it. That's CAVING.
Even a murderous kleptocrat knows when he's been outmaneuvered. They didn't need the 6th Fleet. The fishermen had won public opinion.
marie999
(3,334 posts)What pressure was he under?
SunSeeker
(58,250 posts)The Irish fisherman had won public opinion. They put a glaring spotlight on what Putin was doing, and he was unable to maintain the narrative he was pushing yesterday. He knew he lost the public relations battle with the fisherman, so he caved.

(58,250 posts)If Putin invades Ukraine, he'll want to cut those cables to make it harder for the US and NATO/Europe to communicate.
Apparently Putin already threatened the cables outside Finland.

(24,288 posts)Both of my parents extended families came mostly from Ireland, Scotland and Wales and some were English... and I have said it before.. do not mess with the Irish..for they will crawl out of their own graves to throttle you back to the stone age if you mess with their families. And that is exactly what the Russians were doing for other reasons but they were messing with how these men live..

(81,133 posts)So you put out bottles of vodka and Jameson in front of Russian sailors and Irish fisherman.
We can clearly see how this would go. Both the Russians and Irish can drink a great deal, they love to fight, and are also very sentimental.
So they will drink to oblivion, have a bar fight and then be best friends.

What kind of weirdo thinks a female depiction of an M&M is sexy. Makes ya wonder what goes on in his bed.
