That kind of ultimatum always works so well with young people, doesn't it?

(4,913 posts)You tell kids, teenagers your banning a book, they will read that book. I also said Republicans must have never heard of the internet. What a bunch of idiots.

(41,947 posts)Republicans form committees and read them as a group.
(Can't remember who first said that, pretty sure it was a pro comedian.)
It's a dirty job, but their weighty sense of responsibility forces them to overcome the challenge.
The fact that they 'have to' read some really dirty stuff is just a bonus.

(10,724 posts)any book I wanted to read from the banned book list (except Lady Chatterly's Lover and Tropic of Cancer). He even let me read Candy, or else I snitched it from their bedroom, I don't really remember, lol! I remember Catch-22 was one of them and Catcher in the Rye.
I go a copy of Lady Chatterly from a friend in school. It was being passed around to whomever wanted it. By the time I got it, it was held together with a rubberband.

(81,277 posts)The idea of a banned book was foreign to me.
I would go to the library every week as a child and bring home two big bags of books from all over the library. I read just about anything that was not nailed down.
If any one had told me I was not allowed to read a certain book I would have made a beeline to get that book by hook or crook.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Coming of Age in Mississippi by Ann Moody
And others. Those are just the ones I remember.

(11,089 posts)I'm not surprised--- just tell kids they CAN'T do something... next thing you know they are working it out and doing it.

(41,637 posts)I'm a firm believer that 12 year-olds ARE able to read at an adult level. I was reading adult-level fiction by that age and I was encouraged by my Mom who was a lifelong reader. She loved historical novels so she started me on James Michener and Leon Uris.
My point is that it still takes an adult's understanding of life situations and human behavior which many kids don't have as pre-teens. Just reading the words and the pages of "To Kill a Mockingbird" will not give those youngsters the understanding. Those kids can derive great benefit and enjoyment to be sure, but the discussions need to be led by a teacher or an adult leader. Hopefully their interest and enthusiasm for reading will continue throughout their lives.

(26,257 posts)than the GOP ones there now? I suspect so. I'd like to see then all nominated and then run against these GOP thugs, I suspect that a lot of the kids would win handily.
