(CNN)Throughout the bitter winter, during rain and snow, Jon Vaughn has alternated between sleeping in a tent or a campervan outside former University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel's house.

A former University of Michigan and NFL football player, Vaughn is one of more than 1,000 people --- mostly men -- who says they were abused by athletics doctor Robert Anderson, who worked for the university from 1966 to 2003 treating students across sports including football, track, and wrestling.

Anderson, who died in 2008, subjected students, 90% of whom were men, to "sexually abusive conduct" and invasive exams, including unnecessary genital and rectal examinations, according to a 2021 independent report commissioned by the university.  Many of Anderson's victims were Black -- and survivors say this has played a part in why the abuse was allowed to continue for decades.

In his roles at the university, including director of its health service, team physician for the athletic department and a clinical instructor at the university's medical school, Anderson abused men and women from different racial backgrounds, undergraduate and graduate students, student athletes -- including a two-time Super Bowl champion and former world-class wrestler -- and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, the report found.

The university missed numerous opportunities to stop him over his 37 year long career, it concluded.

1. Abuse is rampant throughout both male and female athletics.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, and in coming years I think we could see an awakening on this issue similar to the Catholic Church abuse that went unaddressed for years.

The other day I saw a story about an NHL player who said he was assaulted:

The Chicago Blackhawks settled a lawsuit filed by a former player who said he was sexually assaulted by an assistant coach during the team's Stanley Cup-winning season in 2010.

In an emotional, televised interview, Beach disclosed detail of his assault, how the team treated him, and the emotional fallout of his assault. Beach was 20 years old at the time of his attack.

If it's happening in the pros, then it must be rampant on the lower levels.

2. Here In Chicago...

...the Beach story got massive coverage. TV, newspapers, sports radio. The TV & papers did NOT cover it as a sports story. There were even serious (op-ed page) opinion pieces calling for more rounds of firings.
It was universally condemned. Most of the biggest players in the coverup were already gone, but a few current team employees lost their jobs.
It's a brutally bad story.

3. This reminds me of my experience at summer camp

45 years ago. I was just 15, and with a physical, I would be able to work the remainder of the summer at this camp. The physical with the highly respected town DR included me pulling down my pants, bending way over and spreading my butt cheeks while the DR was seated behind me. Nothing like any physical id ever had before. Everyone knew the doc was a perv, and a stubbed toe, or poison ivy at this camp had the doc telling the girls to take off clothing. The boys didn't have the same experience. Amazingly, this camp is still thriving. Doc is long dead.
