Some Amazon employees have resorted to quitting their jobs and coming back in higher-paid ones in order to boost their pay in a company culture they say doesn't often give promotions or raises. Insider reported Friday that the e-commerce company is facing ballooning attrition because its compensation structure doesn't reward loyalty, employees say.
Employees say pay bumps can be hard to come by and external hires often outearn longtime Amazon employees in the same position. As a result, a lot of employees believe they can only snag a good raise if they "boomerang," quitting their jobs and coming back to the company in higher-paid roles.

Last year, US-based Amazon Web Services engineers saw a turnover rate of at least 35%, according to two insiders. An Amazon spokesperson said this figure was overstated but didn't offer specifics. Company-wide attrition is between 6% and 8% per year, a former executive said.

Well Jeff Bezos has been giving himself regular raises all these years, hasn't he? Why are the Amazon employees expected to work like slaves when the owner is one of the richest men in the world?

(7,637 posts)The only time you have leverage on your salary is when you negotiate a new job.
Even that won't result in a decent raise where I work.

You certainly can't afford to pay your employees AND order an obscene toy now, can you?

(1,382 posts)In order to recruit new talent, many companies are having to pay recruitment bonuses, and matching wages.
I am actually getting a $2000.00 recruitment bonus for referring a friend, yet my annual raise was very small this year. When starting wages rise, its often the other employees that suffer.

(32,758 posts)... but this article addresses the fact that people aren't getting the promotions they deserve, even though they worked their tail ends off. No raise, no promotion because it went to a "new hire." Except the new hire wasn't really new, it was someone who had quit a while ago and came back at a higher salary level and got what amounted to a promotion.
Why would a company allow that? Because bosses who do the hiring would rather work with someone they already know and trust, someone who gets along and understands their system, etc. It's the hiring managers who enable this work-around, because for some reason at Amazon and other companies, they don't reward people with the promotions they deserve and worked for. Yes the regular employees get screwed, and ones who play the game get the rewards.
