IIRC they don't want to privatize the NWS, just limit it so it can't produce forecasts for the general public. The private companies want to keep the expensive part all taxpayer subsidized, and the private firms just put a pretty face on the final forecast you and I see.

I likely have that wrong somehow, but the private companies definitely don't want to be in the difficult business of collecting data, managing data, running forecast models.
