In the checkout line at the grocery store this morning I noticed that the guy in front of me was wearing a red LGB! (Let's Go Brandon!) hat. (I live in a reliably blue enclave in Northern Virginia, but we still have our idiots.)

Upon catching his eye I told him, "Nice hat." He smirked a little bit and replied, "Hell yes!". I then asked, "How do you identify?" With an extremely confused look on his face he sort of grunted, "Huh?" I responded, "You know, LGB ... I fully support you, but are you lesbian, gay, or bi-sexual?"

The cashier laughed so hard that she was actually snorting, and the woman behind me joined in. The guy never said a word, just harrumphed, paid his bill, and left. I only had a few items to purchase, so by the time I got to the parking lot, he had just finished loading his groceries and was backing out of his parking space.

He flipped me off and I blew him a kiss.

He wasn't wearing his hat anymore.

So, I’ve got gay friends who utterly rank people who protest or disrupt Pride. One of their favorite comebacks is to turn the insults around and encourage the badgerers to come out. They’re not insulting themselves by using the homophobia to make them uncomfortable and ruin their fun.

I know this is inserting LGBTQ into an arena where it’s not the primary issue, but is it insulting to LGBTQ folks? Is it different if the person ranking the hat-wearer is part of that population?

Using gay as an insult is exactly what it is. The whole premise of this little “anecdote” is how the OP makes fun of the hat wearer. No reason anything about sexuality would come into someone’s support of another political party.
