Madison Cawthorn said during the BLM protests in the summer of 2020 we had all of our major cities burned to the ground.

This seriously is a widespread belief among Republicans, including the ones who actually live in cities that were supposedly burned to the ground. And, worse, its a belief shared by many of the "swing voter" numbnuts who vote based on their ill-informed guts.

We saw it over and over in campaign ads & insurrectionists use it as a justification for storming the Capitol. They're still using it and it's still not true.

(6,703 posts)Clearly is the same as "all major cities burned to the ground."

(51,094 posts)Sirens, gunshots, the sounds of a rotating fire were the background for lies about destroyed cities. The blaming of Antifa and BLM for this along with killing tons of police.

(2,636 posts)Rioters targeted the federal courthouse in Portland, Ore., on Thursday evening in renewed clashes between demonstrators and federal police.
Footage showed the rioters attempting to force their way into the courthouse while chanting f*** the United States! Later in the evening rioters set a fire outside the courthouse entrance.
"A fire burns in front of the court" house is not

(15,265 posts)there have been numerous violent riots with the windows of businesss and government buildings being smashed,,
buildings graffitied. There have been numerous arson attempts on government buildings including police buildings usually while there were emoyees inside. Cars vandalized, some lit on fires, fires lit in the streets etc. To the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars of damage. A relatively small group of violent individuals hijack thr protest and violently riot. They rioted when the Orange Anus was elected.
, during after math of George Floyds death (130 + nights) and even when Joe Biden won. During the massive daytime peaceful protest organized by BLM the marches would finish up around 5 or 6pm and the leaders of the event would state that this event is over, go home. Do not particioate in rioting , that is not what we' are about.. There are some anarchists group that claimed ownership of at least some of the violence like the Pacific Northwest Youth Liberation Front.
https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/meet-the-youth-liberation-front-the-militant-group-promoting-a-marathon-of-angry-portland-protests/
During the hundreds of night of rioting large numbers of people would stay into into the evening so the crowds were big but ut was a small number of inviduals doing the violence each night up front yet that violence painted groups with a broad brush
https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2020/09/100-days-of-protests-in-portland.html
Here us a generic Google search for rioting in Portland. https://www.google.com/search?q=rioting+in+portland&oq=rioting+in+Portlabd&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i13l6j0i13i30l2.13679j1j4&client=ms-android-verizon&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
The mistake was letting a small group of violent protester hijack every protest/cause for their own anarchistic agenda terrorizing the city. The rioting is real and allowing and or silently condoning it is the mistake.

(95,247 posts)I cannot help a note of disdain for the young whippersnapper, having in my youth seen tanks rolling through streets of major American cities to halt civil unrest that did indeed burn portions of them to the ground, or near enough to count, anyway. Nothing that happened in 2020 came close, it was like softball at the park by compare with the big leagues.

(51,094 posts)We are not helping ourselves by not confronting stuff like this. Look at the CRT shit going on....we should be screaming about Chris Rufo and how he made it all up. Most people don't like to find out they're being manipulated. (I say most, because MAGATs)

(16,858 posts)This is just the newest bullshit they are pushing. What we should have pushed back harder against are these dangerous mfer's trying to push a white dominant world view of history in the name of protecting kids against "CRT". We're currently seeing states from New Hampshire to the Deep South pushing rules "protecting" students from anything that offends sensibilities. We can't even have an honest conversation about our history with these people.

(58,785 posts)can be even around here among a minority who insist on them. It's not as if by far most people here don't know the truths of whatever the issues are and discuss them over and over.
Of course we need to do anything we can to reach potential swing voters.
While recognizing that authoritarian types on both right and left will insist on pushing whatever they think supports their leaders. Researchers say they more often than not know that they're lying but see it as a virtue. And that's virtually all former tRump voters, not just the crazies -- they've hardened into their positions.

(3,607 posts)The other Lie is about BLM killing that Federal Security Officer in Oakland, and it was one of the Boogaloo guys https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/airman-charged-killing-federal-officer-during-george-floyd-protests-california-n1231187
They get away with it because the media lets them. I can't think of any other reason. Shocking thing after shocking thing and it is both side isms.

(37,159 posts)FOX and every other RW outlet were practically humping that theme and it was eagerly consumed by addicts of that brand of political porn. It confirmed preexisting biases: they've equated riots burning cities with minorities and the left since the 60s. They relished "being proved right."
What apparatus do we have that would so much as give them pause, even if only until their next swig of Cousin Tucker's Bathtub & Toilet Bowl Gin?

(5,557 posts)Powerful images like the one below accompanied with phrases like 'after BLM protests, looting and rioting broke out in X'.

Lets face it, those are very frightening and compelling images. They stick in our memory
The former happened in the same places and the same days as the latter; not because they were directly linked but because both were rooted in the same outrage and unrest.
Correlation is not causation, but the media did us no favors in glossing over the details and distinction
