(24,262 posts)was a somewhat popular slogan in the late 60s. I guarantee it scared the shit out of some people.

(24,262 posts)On one hand, it was worse and scarier then, but on the other hand what is happening now has it's own uniqueness.

(21,417 posts)In the 60s, the very foundation of democracy was not under siege by fascists. There were acknowledged facts in the 60s, not surreal alternate realities.
The street fighting in the 60s was for human dignity and liberty of all Americans, but especially AAs. The street fighting today is over democracy vs. fascism.
Mr.Bill
(24,262 posts)was only the tip of the iceberg compared to what was actually going on. We have way more information available today. And today no high school students are worrying about being being drafted when they graduate from high school and dying in a pointless war on the other side of the planet. Unless you experienced that, I cannot explain what a life-altering experience that was, even for those like me who were not drafted. I had to draw a good number in a lottery to survive that. Imagine watching that lottery on TV. The entire Vietnam war was a criminal military industrial complex operation, as were the more recent middle east wars.
As Mario Savio of the Berkley free-speech movement said, "We are not going to be part of the have-your-children-for-lunch program. Fuck 'em!
And I don't mean to invalidate the points you make, either. They are correct.

(21,417 posts)some heavy-handedness by LEOs and COINTEL agents.
If fascism wins today, protesters will be killed on the spot. Not 4 like Kent State, but all protesters.
Yes, the draft was fear-inducing. As a female, I did not personally face it. But I knew one guy who went underground and then to Canada. I knew couples who married right after high school graduation and had children immediately, for a draft deferment. I knew guys who were drafted and never came home. My brother was already in the Navy as a career before Vietnam. He spent 2 years there and was never the same afterward.
The MIC was in full force then. It was not even a declared war. Our international standing was hurt by it and families were split because of views over it.
But in spite of all that, our institutions still functioned. Facts were still facts. Lies could be called out. The 4th estate still stood up to speak truth to power and to the people. I remember Cronkite's nightly news reports with two sets of casualty figures on the war. One was the official count. The other was eye witness accounts.
Our elections and Congress were not controlled by a hostile foreign power. Desegregation was under way and minorities were getting their voting rights. Their battles for it were brutal, accompanied by murders. But they persisted and made gains.
Today these gains are being wiped out. Half of Congress are owned by a madman who answers to a foreign leader and incites insurrection.
We are one election away from full blown fascism.

(2,535 posts)You can do it numerous times. Death penaltys can get out of hand. The guillotine used by the French Revolutionaries was used out of frustration of slow justice but ultimately frustrated justice.
