UCLA philosophy researcher emails 800-page manifesto & 'UCLA Philosophy Mass Shooting' video

CLA's philosophy department has canceled in-person classes after a former postdoctoral fellow and lecturer sent a video referencing a mass shooting and an 800-page manifesto with "specific threats" to some department members Monday, according to material provided to The Times.

An email sent to students and provided to The Times on Monday night states that Matthew Harris made threats toward the philosophy department and people in the department.

"The material includes a video entitled 'UCLA Philosophy Mass Shooting' and an 800-page manifesto with specific threats towards some members of our department," according to the email.

"In light of this, we will continue to have discussion through Zoom until the authorities say that it is safe. I will keep you updated on this situation. But I would avoid being anywhere near Dodd Hall or the philosophy department until further notice."

“Because his whereabouts are as yet unresolved, out of caution, everyone is permitted, and indeed I recommend, to hold your sections remotely until further notice,” read the email.

The email continues with examples of threats from the researcher who has exhibited “highly erratic behavior” since last spring.

“He had left the area as of June last year, but his whereabouts are currently being investigated because today he sent a barrage of threatening email [sic] to many in the department, and many others.

“The material includes a video entitled ‘UCLA Philosophy Mass Shooting’ and an 800-page manifesto with specific threats toward some members of the department.”

Harris joined the university as a postdoctoral fellow in philosophy after completing his dissertation at Duke University, according to a newsletter from UCLA's Philosophy Department in the spring of 2019.

"He works on philosophy of race, personal identity, and related issues in philosophy of mind," it said.

Harris was placed on leave in the spring of last year while campus officials investigated reports that he sent a video with pornographic content to a student, according to the Daily Bruin student newspaper. His term as a postdoctoral fellow was set to end in June 2021.

Good God, I hope that he is given some serious help before he harms anybody. He needs a lifetime of serious therapy. That you tube channel is quite the horror show. Good God, his mind is warped.
