Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady has officially announced his retirement from the NFL following speculation about his future over the weekend.
"I have always believed the sport of football is an 'all-in' proposition -- if a 100% competitive commitment isn't there, you won't succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game. There is a physical, mental, and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life, Brady wrote in a lengthy Instagram post on Tuesday.
This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention, he continued.

(15,793 posts)What he accomplished is exceptional. He was looked at as a weak player when he was chosen 22 years ago but then to become the best player in football history is astonishing. Hard work can get you far in life! Good for his accomplishments. You brought jobs, revenue and morale to Boston and Tampa. God speed GOAT!

(146,295 posts)I'm not even sure why praise for a retiring QB belongs on DU at all, really.
In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter at all.
Just saw Joe Namath doing some lame ad on TV yesterday.

(32,003 posts)Football is a sport tens of millions watch and take interest in. Far, far more than day to day politics. And certainly posts about it are more interesting than the never ending "I just got my booster shot today" OPs.

Hats off the the GOAT.

Friendly relations with Trump as possible evidence of brain damage aside, he appears to have walked away relatively healthy. Good decision to stop tempting fate playing another season at 45 years old.
