Trump May Yet Save the Democrats
Today on TAP: The idea of pardoning January 6 insurrectionists will split Republicans, scare off voters.
by Robert Kuttner
January 31, 2022

I keep writing that the Democrats’ not-so-secret weapon for 2022 will be Donald Trump—and the man keeps proving me right. As more and more details emerge about the January 6th coup attempt, thanks to the superb work of the House Select Committee, public opinion will keep turning against what was a flagrant attempt to violently overthrow a democratically elected president and install a dictator. (A special shout-out to the superb work of Rep. Jamie Raskin.)

snip//

A presidential pardon for Trump’s thugs who face criminal charges for a failed coup! Republican House and Senate candidates for 2022 need this like they need herpes.

Nearly all sitting Republicans voted against impeaching Trump for his role in the January 6 coup, and nearly all refused to cooperate with the Select Committee. Mostly, they just want this to go away.

But thanks to the Select Committee on one flank, aided by Trump on the other, the coup will become more and more headline news. No polls are out yet on public support for Trump’s pardon offer, but I will eat my shirt if voters don’t oppose it by at least 2-to-1.

What exactly will Republicans say when their Democratic opponents keep raising all this in the fall campaign? Will they go down to defeat defending Trump? One certainly hopes so. And we can count on Trump to keep providing more such ammunition.

The only problem is we have a chicken-shit DOJ that won't do the right thing. I am sick and tired of hearing about how orange asshole is going to be taken down. I will believe it when I see it. I have heard this from my fellow liberals since the day after that terrible election night in 2016. Mueller will save us and this person will save us and something will save us. If it happens, I promise to eat my words, but 5 years later............I am not holding my breath.

Those who implicate higher ups get lighter sentences. The DOJ is working its way up the hierarchy to get the Slobfather nailed, convicted and imprisoned, but it takes time. This is the way Garland prosecuted the Mob.

The Slobfather has always managed to wiggle his way out of trouble, but I'm sure Garland won't let him get away.

Do you not agree we have heard this BS for 5 years and counting? That is truth and it is on record. Are we not skeptical at this point? Do we not have plenty of evidence to be skeptical at this point? I operate on the principle of "don't tell me something, show me something." We all know a bad precedent was set when Ford pardoned Nixon and that has continued up to now. T___p needs to be prosecuted and put in jail, and it should have happened sooner. I am just so pessimistic about anything good coming from "investigations" and "reports" that I have lost all hope of a positive outcome. I know how things work in the legal system as well, but people (yes the DOJ even) are scared shitless by these wannabe Nazi's, and there is no getting around that. I hope I am wrong.....

I just want something to happen. I am tired of inaction. The guy clearly broke the law, numerous times, and the proof is there.

The sig? Yeah I almost had a third college degree in philosophy, to go along with history and economics.

Background. I almost got a "third one" but in computer cartography, so I could facilitate my socio-political arguments. It didn't quite work out.

I am a thinker, always have been, but thinker never did pay the bills. After years of self-employment dealing with residential construction inspection etc, I am now in a trades program, through the IBEW, for becoming an electrician. Not easy work, but it does challenge the brain and it can pay very well. Though if America crashes and burns soon..........it won't matter. LOL

I'm a public lands and wildlife management policy wonk, I ended up mostly engaged in public outreach and ed, which is not my cup of tea but it paid the bills. And you're correct, if we don't fix some serious problems real soon, it won't matter.

I disagree that our DOJ is chickenshit.

However, Barr's DOJ was a mere tool for 45's obstruction.

We all know the Senate is chickenshit (well, part of it for sure). I just don't trust it. We all heard Mueller and then impeachment, and.......... You see where I am going. Normal humans go to jail for such smaller crimes than T___p, yet, I want to see the entitled get theirs for once, especially that asshole.
