Charles Ryans wife told Tempe police that hed knocked back half a large bottle of tequila the evening officers were called to their home.
Thered been a gunshot in the bathroom. She said Ryans hand was covered in blood and he was bleeding from the head. Police later came to believe the injuries were the result of fragments of a sink into which there had been an unintended firearm discharge.
Ryan is the former director of the Arizona Department of Corrections.
He was appointed first by former Gov. Jan Brewer, then retained on the job by Gov. Doug Ducey. There had been some controversy toward the end of his tenure but, still, after he retired Ducey said, Ryan has committed his life to serving in the corrections field for more than 40 years
Im grateful to Director Ryan for his dedication and service.
Police used bean bags instead of bullets
On Jan. 6, however, Ryan was a man with a gun that apparently had been fired and a family that was worried about his safety, and their own.
