I ordered and put a deposit down on a generator last July and I am still waiting for it to be installed. ARGGH

Abbott held a press conference on Tuesday alongside officials from the Public Utility Commission of Texas, Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to address the electrical grid's reliability as part of the state prepares for freezing temperatures.
The National Weather Service warned of freezing rain and cold temperatures beginning Wednesday afternoon in central Texas, bringing at least 2 inches of sleet and snow with it.
Compare the above to what Greg said earlier

(115,691 posts)Of course that craven douchenozzle says "no one can guarantee" power outages won't happen again, because he didn't do jack-shit about what caused the power outages last year.

(38,489 posts)The grid has not been upgraded, so it's bound to happen again.

(65,031 posts)Given the text, I'm guessing it should have been "unplanned".
Planned outages happen all the time, for maintenance. The plants coordinate, and in some state multiple generators can cooperatively plan, so that only 1 or 2 plants are down at a time. Remaining generation capacity can then handle the short term increased demand.
So of course, there will be planned outages.
Either the headline is flubbed or Abbott misspoke like the idiot he is.

Democrats should invest campaign money elsewhere, and just let Texas be Texas.

(3,332 posts)This is what O'Rourke has been hammering him on, and given any widespread outages of note will only solidify the perception of Abbott as a) in ERCOT's pockets and b) incompetent as it applies to an actual response.

(7,410 posts)You cant guarantee power will stay on during big weather events. I live in a blue county ten miles from the Gulf of Mexico, if a hurricane hits the power is going out, its a given.
They have done a bunch since the last couple of hurricanes, mostly cutting back trees from overhead power lines and all new construction has to be buried underground if possible.
Of course the tree huggers as we call them, complain nonstop about the utility companies cutting back their trees. The power company just cut down about 10 oak and pine trees along the power lines bordering two sides of my six acres, Im all for it, Id rather have reliable power than a few extra trees along the road.

(13,552 posts)estimate to install a backup generator. Emailed, phoned etc. Said they would call to set up an appointment, never heard from them.
I guess they've been so busy they don't need the extra business.
Heard somewhere the generators were back-ordered and would be months before you could get one assuming you could get an installer company to come out.

(145,231 posts)I made the appointment in May and the representative came out July31 and she promised the generator sometime in late January or early February.
I have been hoping that Greg will not let another blackout occur just before the GOP primary on March 1

With ice storm coming, Gov. Abbott retreats from previous guarantee the lights will stay on across Texas
In November, Abbott said "I guarantee the lights will stay on"; during an afternoon news conference today he said "No one can guarantee that there wont be a 'load shed event.'" Multiple journalists made note of this including Mose Buchele at KUT in Austin
