ABC News suspended "The View" host Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks on Tuesday night, one day after she drew significant criticism for falsely declaring that the Holocaust was "not about race."
"Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments," ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a statement.
"While Whoopi has apologized, I've asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments," Godwin added. "The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities."
As Godwin said in her statement, Goldberg had in fact apologized for her remarks. On Monday night, Goldberg apologized in a note posted to Twitter. And on Tuesday, Goldberg opened up "The View" offering yet another apology.

(40,211 posts)I think she feels bad, but might not really understand why what she said is wrong. Maybe a field trip to The Holocaust Museum would have been a better choice than a suspension.

(28,075 posts)Whoopi issued a sincere apology and made it clear this was a learning experience for her. I don't think she deserves this.

(34,195 posts)She didn't say what she said due to hate.
It was more of an uneducated comment.
Once it was explained to her,
she made a public apology.

I too stand in solidarity with our Jewish friends, family, and communities, but Godwin doubling down on that in her statement is simply wrong.

(9,073 posts)I don't think the response would be, "This suspension is unnecessary!"
She said what she said. Then doubled down on Colbert. Then released a limp apology that was obviously crafted by PR. Because I suspect if it had come out of her own mouth live on air, it would've just been another Colbert.
Whoopi has problematic views on race and sexual assault. It's not her first rodeo. Papering over bad behavior because we like the person makes our condemnations of the people we don't less credible.

(53,956 posts)Unlike a republican, I do believe her apology was honest, PR or not. Two weeks suspension seems a bit much, but I have noticed how the new "outrage" is this event and how many of us, especially Jews, were 'scolded' for the original "outrage." Hmmmm.

(9,073 posts)I'm not one for deplatforming in general. Let people bury themselves. However, I have a very tough time thinking everyone wouldn't have been all over this if someone from the other side ventured it.
It feels like saying, "Slavery wasn't really about race. It was just terrible economics."
Whoopi forgot the first rule of holes. I don't think she thinks she's wrong after Colbert. The apology is just, "What do I have to say to make this go away." Which is fine. Usual celebrity stuff. It's the View, not a Mensa chapter. Expectations are real low.
That said, what do you mean about the "original" outrage? You mean when she first said it on the View? Did people scold Jews initially?
I've been very busy and haven't followed everything going on in pop culture the past week, so I only caught wind of this post-Colbert.
