If he really wanted me to have a happy birthday, he should have sent those low heel pumps I've been eyeing.
Recently I've been looking at plain black dresses and plain black shoes. Over the last several months there have been multiple deaths in my family and as I am the youngest of the first cousins, and I'm no spring chicken, I figure I'll need a few more outfits before much longer.
Yesterday it did occur to me that I might just be buying my own burial togs instead of dressing myself for the funeral of others.
The potential irony of the situation was not lost on me. I laughed at myself. Grimly.
Before anyone bust a gut - No. I am not paying several hundred dollars (plus) on a pair of shoes. Not even with that not-so-tempting "$50.00" off birthday discount.
But I don't skimp on shoes either. I need my feet.
I'll happily wear second-hand clothing and do, but I coddle my tootsies.
My feet have gotten me this far and I need them to get me on down the road a few more decades.
I abused my feet with 6-inch heels in my teens and early twenties and it shows. I've spent the years in between pampering them with flats, long soaks, and Vaseline.
I didn't see my shadow this morning, as I stood out on the grass, cold and damp, in my stocking feet.
While wiggling my toes in the still wet grass, remnant of the rain the night before, I thought about the years of living on those old feet.
The story they tell and the stories they could tell if they could talk.
Every year on this day I look for my shadow.
And every year on this day I think six weeks is six weeks away but today is the day I have, so today is the day I'll experience.
With a little help from my feet.
Wishing you all the best day ever and the happiest feet ever.

(175,731 posts)My favorite flats ever are Tieks. They're quite pricey, but are so comfortable that it's almost like not wearing shoes.

(31,384 posts)Nothing but kitten heels for me anymore, too. Not that there has been anywhere to wear them for the last two years.
All it takes is a colorful scarf or artsy jewelry to turn that black dress and black shoes into something to wear for a night out. I hope there will be more of those events in your future than the ones you are envisioning now. And I'm sorry you have lost so much family recently.
Carpe diem.

(90,762 posts)I got some artsy earrings for my birthday from my other half. He took the obvious hints I gave him and did good. I love scarves and have a collection of them.
Later today I am going to venture out for a little fun. In jeans, mind you. lol

(2,787 posts)and Happy Birthday. My Hubby's is tomorrow... and my birthday is Feb 4th (the day after) at least he can never forget MY birthday! (LOL). We don't really do the outside toesie thing on our birthdays, as it's usually covered with snow, as it is this year! But last night, we sat down and signed up for burial insurance and I talked him into doing a Legal Zoom for a Will. Also discussed funerals and we got all that straightened out between us. Great birthday talk, ain't it? Do our aging birthdays bring it out in all of us?! At least we both agreed on Natural Burials if I can find a cemetery close we can be buried in.
Today is Imbolc and we're both frolicking like calves, along with the puppy who would be a pony. She in the snow, we in the house with 10 cats. Later this afternoon, we'll salute Brigid and leave a saucer of milk and one of bread for Her, and any passing feral or wayward soul who should need it on this day of rebirth. May the year of the Tiger bring you much luck, love, and prosperity! May adversity flee from the very nature of your strength!
Note: Editing of typos due to cats walking over wrists!

(90,762 posts)There are 4 February birthdays in my immediate family. The previous May was a good month, I guess.
Getting older means those talks are a must and that's OK. As much as I didn't like the planning, we still managed to laugh our way through it.
Thank you again!

(9,067 posts)a good amount of grief for it. They look good but I never took to them. Chunky boot heels are doable, the highest I got was maybe 3 inches otherwise I will topple over. Wedges are interesting. Still working on mastering those but my favorites are slides. I live in L.A. and I rarely wear "shoes" except for working out or for special occasions and even then it might be slides.
Solly Mack
(90,762 posts)I used to wear hiking boots with dresses as a child, much to my mom's embarrassment, and then got into heels. Left those behind for flats.
I do love a heeled Mary Jane though.

(9,067 posts)I bought a pair of nude ones that they sold for tap dancing when I was younger. I nearly forgot about those.

(20,237 posts)I also wore way high heels in my younger days. Not for years now, tho.
The foot docs would 'love' to reprimand this: Me wearing rubber beach type flip-flops year round inside. And out on property when warm. I won't drive in them tho'. Dangerous.
My feet expanded. Was size 6 1/2 decades ago, transitioned into 7, now size 8, sometimes 8 1/2. Blech.
I did buy a jewelry gift for someone recently on Amazon and clicked on a sweatshirt type top. It was by a designer and selling at $300+!!! Originally $700+. Yikes. Yah, it's cool, but no thanx. I hear yah re: Jimmy Choo!
Solly Mack
(90,762 posts)I love flip-flops. I need garden/rain boots for outside though. Live near the woods and need added protection from things slithering about.
I might pay 6 bucks for a sweatshirt. Maybe more for an event sweatshirt but not much more.

(9,242 posts)All that was very interesting... but, 6 inch heels??? Wow.
I liked the 3 1/2 - 4 inch height, but even those became too much.
But the memories are still fun.
You have a GREAT day!

(90,762 posts)Six-inch heels were my go-to "party" shoes and I loved to dance.

Ill be wearing the prettiest dress I own to my funeral!
Im sorry youre losing your cousins.

(90,762 posts)My husband asked me what I wanted to being wearing at that time and I said, "Surprise me".
It sucks. Though I'm closer in age to my second cousins, younger than some of them even, I'm more connected to my first cousins.
Thanks, again.
