NOWAY he'll be re-elected, but could there ever be another animal like him? Wouldn't surprise me if Marjorie taylor Greene took his FN place!

(4,454 posts)He may not win re-election, but he will seize power if he is not in jail. He will simply declare he won, call on his flying monkeys to go out and "back his win" and literally set off a civil war. While I trust the military to do what's right, I do not trust state and local law enforcement to not back Trump. Once these people are given an excuse use all the guns they have, things are going to get bloody. And even if the insurrection is suppressed, it will be at great expense.

(52,118 posts)instead of the fascist propaganda machine that it is, we will have a king series of would-be dictators and lying nutjobs.

(115,596 posts)megalomaniacs, psychopaths, the Hitlers and Stalins who became dictators, and plenty of others who wanted to be dictators. Whether someone like Trump can becoming another Hitler or Stalin is determined by their ability to get people to follow them. MTG doesn't have TFG's ability to con people - she's obviously an idiot, as are most of the other Trump wannabes. TFG had the advantage of existing fame, in particular the fiction created by his reality tv show, that conned people into believing he was a brilliantly successful billionaire businessman - and Americans love flashy rich people. None of the other wannabes have that advantage; the likes of MTG and Lauren Boebert are trashy loudmouths; DeSatan and the other established politicians are boring. But we have to watch out for the charismatic demagogues.

(3,212 posts)There is something very unique about Rump.
There were always liars and fledgling fascists on the right, but Rump is special -
Because he lies almost constantly and seems to largely believes his own lies, self-gaslighting.
He lives in his own delusional world that has just enough reality to fool his fools.
He has so much narcissism and genuine insane hate in a psuedo-rich white-male-tall-blonde (fatass) shell, that others would be hard to mimic. Yeah, I think his look is part of it all for the neo-nazis. Upper European of German heritage. It's all part of the evil package, I'm afraid.
Oh well.

(90,557 posts)It seems we are in one of those places in world history, and it really is not all about us.
Regarding the US, we have a population that is more ill-educated and ill-informed than ever before. They are frightened (social change, climate change, pandemic, lots of things), and frightened people are angry. Trump has molded his followers into a mob, and mobs are irrational and dangerous, yet easily-enough they can be aimed at the Capitol, for instance.
In such situations, people look for a strongman to make it all go away. They want certainty, not freedom. Oh sure, theyll bleat about their personal freedom, but what they want is a strongman to tell them whats what, and who The Other is so they can blame the Other for their problems.
Trump only looks unique. In some ways maybe he is, yet he is paving the way for American strongmen to come, people with more brains and a longer vision. And such people are fine with chaos as a way to ascend to power.
We are, I think, at a turning point in history across the world. It will be very difficult to effectively pull together on climate change or the pandemic under the circumstances. Chaos-leaders and strongmen dont gain much, if anything, by encouraging their populations to unite around anything but themselves.
We are fortunate to have Joe Biden as a respite. Oddly enough, I felt exactly the same about Barack Obama, coming as he did after 8 years of BushCheney. Obama wasnt the answer to all our problems: he was a respite and a chance for us to get our act together. Instead, we got Trump and the mother of all backlashes.
Well, this is bleak. Yet there is hope. There is always hope. I think we know what to do.

(11,725 posts)Trump modeled some of his antics, and apparently admired to some degree, Andrew Jackson. Jackson was a vulgarian, undisciplined, person who picked fights (literally and figuratively) with everyone, who was racist, sexist, etc... Nixon, though much smarter and able to mask the depths with which he wanted total power, was similarly corrupt. Nixon absolutely HATED the press and it was he, Pat Buchanan, and Roger Ailes who began working toward what became Fox News and the right wing propaganda media system. Warren Harding was a scandalous MFer. He and Coolidge (mainly because of Harding) had the most scandal plagued and corrupt administrations prior to Nixon's.
This is the problem with sanitizing American History. We like to think that Trump is an aberration. Unique in his corruption. Trump is the result of one Party, and ideological movement (Conservatism) not caring about ethics, morals, and laws so that they could maintain power even though they really are the minority of people in this country.
What the above mentioned Presidents did not have at their disposal, that Trump and anyone who follows in his foot steps, is a coordinated media system that has 30% of the people detached from reality. The Republican Party has moved so far to the right that neither Nixon, nor Reagan would likely be acceptable to them these days.
One thing we can be relatively assured of is the Greene will NOT be the next person to become the leader of this movement. She is at her apex now and will likely be out of office and out of power in the next few years.
