Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., joined a growing chorus of Republicans bashing President Joe Biden's Supreme Court nominee well before the president has picked anyone even as Republican leaders try to avoid a losing fight ahead of the midterms.
Republican Senate leaders worry that picking a fight over Biden's nominee to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer, when they lack enough votes to block the nomination, would be "counterproductive" and could "backfire" by distracting from key election issues, according to Wednesday's edition of Politico Playbook. (Judicial nominations cannot be blocked through a Senate filibuster, a change introduced by Republicans when they held the majority.) Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told members on Tuesday that replacing a liberal justice with another liberal would not affect the balance of the court, especially after the party packed the court with conservatives under former President Donald Trump.
But some Republican senators have repeatedly attacked Biden for vowing to nominate a Black woman to the court, even though Trump and former President Ronald Reagan similarly vowed to nominate women to diversify a court that has been dominated by white men for generations.

(70,488 posts)... from the log he was cutting trying to do his best Ronnie Reagan "clearing brush" act and
the log kicked up almost hitting a man whose job it was to make sure that the dumb fuck didn't
hurt himself and then his chain saw got wedged into the log. I was with a friend and his wife both
of whom have a little country smarts in them and we all started laughing. I thought then and
there we should just give his Stihl chain saw, make sure it starts, and send him out to cut
some wood and Darwin would call him home.
BTW I went to CVS today and got free M-95 masks and cheap home test kits. Joe Biden is the man.

I lucked in, no kits but Meijer was giving the masks out. Went to get ground meat on sale. The poor clerks had them spread out to make the case look fuller but I did get a big package of fresh ground.
Then Tuesday I went to Krogers. Beef roast on sale $4.99. I looked down saw 2 packages they just marked down. The sale date was 3 days ahead, 40% off. Felt so good. The lines were,20,30 long. I walked around, a lane came open, 3 rd in line!
Now, we are getting 6 to 8 inches of snow. The news said panic buying had depleted the stores.

(50,552 posts)Doesnt know a law book from a J. Crew catalog describes Amy Coney Barrett, chosen only because of her loyalty to Trump
and Kennedy happily voted for her.
Of course, we COULD ask for Deborah Davis, a prosecutor in Michigan who knows her way around both a law book and a J. Crew catalog
but she seems pretty happy with her life in Michigan so why screw that up?

(36,018 posts)The bullshit Right considers those below as just hanging with the rich who want to unite the West with Russia, when they are sold out suckups to mafia rule by fossil oligarchs. Do we have fossil oligarchs? fuck yeah. But we also have democratically elected officials who don't play with Putin, who believe in regulation of capitalism and live up to their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution, flawed as it is.
Fuck Kennedy and the fascist hobbyhorse he rode in on.
The 23% of the unserious, illiberal GOP must be beat down for good.

Our President Joe Biden knows exactly how intelligent and capable his Supreme Court nominee is...........he doesn't need a stupid John Kennedy to question his decision. Our dear President knows exactly what he is doing......he is a whole lot smarter with a whole lot more experience than Sen John Kennedy!!!

(42,688 posts)Some of the other times he's referred to J. Crew (there probably are others):
November 2021:I am pro-life. I am anti-Roe v. Wade. . . . But, Mr. President, even pro-choice legal scholars who believe in legalized abortion on demand understandas does every fair-minded person who knows a law book from a J. Crew catalogthat Roe v. Wade is one of the most arbitrary, its one of the most ad hoc, its one of the most poorly-reasoned decisions in the history of the United States. Anyone, Mr. President, who knows a law book from a J. Crew catalog also knows that theres absolutely no foundationnot in the text, not in the structure, not in the history, not in the tradition of the Constitutionfor a constitutional right to abortion, and certainly not on the basis of some unmoored general right to privacy thats not enunciated in the Constitution.
April 2021: "Anybody who knows a law book from a J.Crew catalog knows that Democrats attempt to add D.C. as a state is unconstitutional."
February 2020 (during first Trump impeachment trial): "Anyone who knows a lawbook from a J. Crew catalog does not take this charge seriously."
November 2019: "any lawyer, in my judgment, who knows a law book from a J. Crew catalog knows that a- a sterile transcript is no substitute for live witnesses."
May 2019: Anybody who knows a law book from a J. Crew catalog knows Roe v. Wade was one of the most poorly reasoned decisions in the history of the United States Supreme Court.
