(82,849 posts)Though this is how these cockamamie ideas begin creeping into our societal discourse. This "closely held religious beliefs" bullshit needs to be dropped into a volcano, because it keeps getting invoked to exempt crybabies and yahoos from their civic duty, without those malcontents ever have to establish what religion, what their objection is based on, how long this "closely held" belief has been a thing, or if it just gets raised to stop whatever a tyrannical minority doesn't want to do because they're irresponsible ciitzens.

(11,285 posts)is using the pretext of "religious liberty" to privatize public education. Make it such a mess that parents start to withdraw their children from the system and place them into so-called "charter" schools, thus siphoning off public tax dollars into for-profit systems, which neither care, nor desire to "educate" anyone, but simply to "maximize profits".
The hubris of "prosperity evangelism" is starting to metastasize. God is dead. Money has replaced that fanciful figurehead through the unholy alliance of tax-free televangelism, corporate greed, and the unbridled lust for power in unscrupulous politicians.
The old adage still applies: If I rob a bank of a million dollars, but only have to pay a hundred dollar fine for doing so, then I WILL NEVER STOP ROBBING BANKS.
While we're all aghast at the book bans, our money is being further siphoned off into the pockets of the 1%.
There's profit in chaos. But who really benefits?
