in class about Reconstruction today. Granted the language got pretty intense, luckily no administrators passed my classroom as the kids were ranting. Much of it was just anger, but some were truly perplexed at how it happened and why the government didn't do anything about Jim Crow laws....the kids were on fire. It was awesome, and I teach in a Title 1 school where tempers flare often, but not today...today was about passion and how to prevent Jim Crow, voting restriction, abortion, hot button issues for sure. The kids took it and ran with it today. It made my day and I hope they will have that much passion as we begin discussing Westward movement and Reservations and Indian Normal Schools........It was a fun day to teach for a change.....!!!!

Nothing that might conceivably make white people feel "uncomfortable!"

... about "what happened in school today." You never know for sure if the kids will get it right when they tell their parents. You never know if the parents will take it the right way, or if they're looking for something to pick a fight over. Luckily teenagers are wary about telling their parents anything, for that exact reason.

I'm glad your class challenged you and each other, it sounds like it was really interesting.

“SS” refers to Social Studies.

Although I suspect a few of my high school teachers were former SchutzStaffel.

especially when, upon asking, you get juvenile responses indicating that one "should" know.

Countries that start banning books and using dehumanizing language like the conservatives and MAGAs are doing are about to do some really evil shit.

however, I am more afraid for our democracy every day that passes. Unless those responsible are prosecuted, we are headed down a path of no recovery.

Once they're freely talking to you and to each other, willing to listen, unafraid to disagree, able to change their minds, not just now and then but repeatedly, aware that everyone can make contributions and everyone can make mistakes --- once that's happening, and they're growing their own ideas and relationships, without fear, hate isn't an attractive option to them

I make sure the kids know I make mistakes and appreciate having my mistakes corrected; I make sure they know I'm sure my own insight into them is limited and I'm sure their insight into each other is similarly limited

We shall surely win as we remain confident in the ultimate victory of good over evil
