The sanctuary closed from Friday to Sunday for the duration of the We Stand America border security rally nearby, headlined by QAnon conspiracy theorists and supporters of former President Donald Trump ......
........... The butterfly center first sued the Trump administration in 2017 on environmental grounds, arguing that proposed border wall construction would destroy crucial habitat for butterflies and birds, and even block migration routes for species that fly lower to the ground. The center alleges that workers began work surveying their land and cutting down trees on their property without permission. ............
It later sued We Build the Wall, a nonprofit led by Bannon that raised more than $25 million with online fundraisers. The lawsuit accuses the organization and its founder, Brian Kolfage, of defaming the butterfly center and Treviño-Wright, and opening them up to targeted harassment, among other allegations about its efforts to construct the wall in Texas near the nature preserve.
Kolfage, Bannon and several others were indicted in August 2020 for allegedly using We Build the Wall donations for personal expenses.

(4,352 posts)I would guess this sanctuary is likely a stop on the annual Monarch butterfly migration to/from Mexico. If so, the Monarchs have been dropping in population. People are working to increase their numbers and provide a safe and healthy migration route.
Attacking this sanctuary in any way is absurd.

(9,988 posts)The Fascist ideal of the Ubermensch means white human dominion over everything, including the natural world. Wantonly killing wildlife and destroying ecosystems for power and profit is a matter of pride in this ideology.
White settlers wantonly killed bison for no reason other than because they could, because they took joy in destruction, and because it would harm the Native people who relied on them. Millions of majestic animals slaughtered and the bodies left to rot. With malicious purpose.
The kind of people who did this in the 19th century are still with us. They still have that desire to destroy. They will never admit their ancestors did wrong.
They shamelessly mock everyone who cares about other life forms and wants to preserve the Earth (the place where we all live, there is no Planet B)
It's been a hallmark of the hard right to violently push back on even the tamest environmental protections for decades. It's not rational, it's an id-driven hard-on for conquering and destruction.

You might think I am joking, but if people that care about American Democracy don't get off their asses and vote like the very survival of Americans Democracy is at stake, we are not far from the above scenario.
I am not in as good of shape as I used to be, but I am sure I can take on some Nazis.
