(10,495 posts)of our Representatives. It is a root cause of most of our problems.
The other root cause is the propaganda spewed by the media at the behest of the Big Advertisers (Donors) to manipulate the public to doing what they want. They generally use it to blame minorities, immigrants, the poor, disabled, and the elderly for the lack of money/programs caused by their looting of our treasury and tax loopholes.
We need everyone to join together to push these two root causes to the front burner and demand they be the issues we fight for. Without these changes we will continue to spiral down.

(58,361 posts)those are carcinogenic dysfunctions for any well functioning society; that's cares about its' people as a whole.
Just follow the money and you will find many would be, great policies buried along the trail.
I couldn't agree more. Let's repeat this far and wide and start the momentum to overturn Citizens United and maybe reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.
I would like to see money out of politics or at least require networks to have to provide a certain amount of time for debates and interviews with candidates and outlaw political commercials all together. The obscene amount of money that has to be raised to get a message out is ridiculous and it's sickening that it goes mostly to these horrible media companies that profit the most from negative politics. Not to mention that the barrage of sound bites and negative adds that don't actually get people to listen to the message anyway. It is the ultimate dumb-ing down of politics (based on fear usually) so people just follow those around them if they participate at all.

(9,760 posts)Just when my husband had the best healthcare plan he'd ever had for a low cost, he turned 65 and was forced to trade Obamacare for Medicare. And he'd already reached his out-of-pocket limit on Obamacare for the year, in July, and had to start all over on Medicare.
The timing was especially bad as a few months prior to his 65th birthday he'd been diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of prostate cancer. We are in a fight for his life and that change in healthcare coverage has made it even more of a nightmare.

(9,760 posts)actually thinking it would be one consolation to mitigate the difficulties of aging. Unlike me--long, serious case of Lyme, bipolar, etc.-- my husband was never sick. The insurance companies really made out well with him. All those thousands & thousands he paid year after year...
Thanks for the well wishes. Very sorry about your wife's illness. I hope you describing her as "recovering" is a good sign. Best to you both.

(21,106 posts)Yes, her Dr finally used the "R" word, and he is one of those who is very reluctant to do so. She is still getting infusions to help her immune system (thank you Covid), but that $150 a month, out of pocket, is a small price to pay. Sending good thoughts your way.

(3,173 posts)I am in a really weird position having turned 65 in December, but I had intended working for a while longer and kept my employer's group coverage. On Jan 15th they laid me off throwing all my careful planning into confusion. Now I'm in limbo between applying for Medicare and group coverage terminated. :grrrrr:
Luckily I got three months of most meds in December. One only lets me have 30 days at a time though. :grrrrrrrrrrrr:
I already know Medicare won't accept COBRA as qualifying coverage, although I can't begin to imagine why not.
What can I do in the interim since Medicare has 60 days to accept me?

(6,228 posts)for Medicare. If you weren't laid off, you should have signed up for Part A (hospital coverage) anyway. There's a penalty later on if you don't sign up. To answer your question, there are insurance companies that have temporary short term insurance. I had to get it once,

(3,173 posts)So I have now applied, but I presume I won't actually be covered for at least 26 days (March 1st?).
Thanks I'll see if CoveredCalifornia will take me .

No one has to choose between Sanders OR the Democratic Party adding dental benefits to the ACA. And no one should. Like the guy, and also vote for Democrats to make it happen. Choose dental care!

(9,287 posts)I am lucky. Many older people cant and the lack of coverage for dental, eye and hearing care for seniors is shameful. Hearing, seeing and eating are essential parts of a human life. Medicare should cover these essential services.

(54,378 posts)Though this week, I was talking about retirement with someone here. I said I would definitely not be doing my current job in 20 years. He answered that he was pretty sure I would retire in ten years, at age 70. I laughed. Ten years? Ill be 70 in six weeks! He didnt believe me until others who have known me for decades confirmed it.

(5,719 posts)Maybe some of the other provinces in Canada cover them, but they're not a part of our basic health care here. As of 2019, 18% of British Columbians don't even have a family doctor (and probably over 20% based on the news in the last couple of years). There is no way BC could afford dental services on top of basic medical with the funding models we have now in the province.

(5,395 posts)Dental, glasses and hearing aids are outside the normal coverage.
And boy, are people working in those fields sure making the most of it! Greedy people!
Pharmaceuticals would be the same if the government didn't have a firm grasp there. And subsidizing medicines.

(22,767 posts)Long ago this country was sold to the corporatists and we all let it keep on happening. It's got to stop! There's no valid reasons for people to be unable to afford meds when someone else is making money hand over fist on them.
