'Mother Mary Was Essentially Raped,' Mourdock Says

NEW ALBANY, IN—Defending his comment that a woman becoming pregnant from rape “is something God intended,” Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock dug himself into an even deeper hole today when he argued that, if you really stop to think about it, the Virgin Mary was basically raped by God.

“Mary certainly didn’t ask for God to impregnate her with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but obviously the Immaculate Conception, while not the result of a consensual act, was still a part of God’s plan—you see what I’m getting at, right?” said the 61-year-old man who currently serves as the state treasurer of Indiana.

“Of course I don’t condone sexual assault. I’m just saying that sometimes when a woman is violated and impregnated against her will, it’s actually a really good thing in the end, because God’s rape of Mary gave us Jesus, and Jesus saved mankind from sin. So that’s one example right there.” At press time, multiple male Senate candidates in their 60s remained divided between those who believe pregnancies resulting from rape are biologically impossible and those who believe they are the divine will of God.

God didn't actually ask permission, nor did he respect Joseph's claim on Mary. That's rape and adultery, and if you then add to it Mary's age, it's also statutory rape.

teach that God did physically visit Mary and had sex with her.

Orson Pratt taught:

"[God] had a lawful right to overshadow the Virgin Mary in the capacity of a husband, and beget a Son , ...it may be that ... He intended after the resurrection to again take her as one of his own wives to raise up immortal spirits (bear his children) in eternity." ('The Seer, p. 158)

Brigham Young:

"The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood--was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers." (Journal of Discourses, volume 8, p. 115)

In this manual Joseph F. Smith is quoted under the heading, "A MODERN PROPHET'S ANSWER":

"Now we are told in Scriptures that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God in the flesh. Well, now for the benefit of the older ones, how are children begotten? I answer just as Jesus Christ was begotten of his father... We must come down to the simple fact that God Almighty was the Father of His Son Jesus Christ. Mary, the virgin girl, who had never known mortal man, was his mother. God by her begot His son Jesus Christ. And he was born into the world with power and intelligence like that of his Father."

Taken from http://www.mormonwiki.org/Conception_of_Jesus

I think they have walked back from these thoughts, but it is interesting in light of the discussion. I particularly like Pratt's statement that God had every right to "rape" Mary being that he is God. Got to love the Old Testament feel of that sentiment. Just like God had to right to wipe out all but a sliver of humanity and animals or that he could order his "chosen" people to commit genocide including "bludgeoning babies".

According to the Bible, when the Angel Gabriel announced God's plan to Mary, she asked how this would be possible, as she had not "known a man." Even Mary had doubts! After the angel's brief explanation, she said, "Behod, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word," or "according to God's will," or however the translation may have been made.

God granted man - and WOMAN - free will. Mary had the right to refuse. Had Mary refused, Jesus would not have been born, at least, not to Mary. That is part of the reason she is honored, because she accepted this very difficult task and path.
