Conservative-led school board fires superintendent after teachers protest alleged private ultimatumA school board outside Denver voted to fire the districts superintendent Friday night in a controversial move that came amid accusations that the newly-elected conservative majority had violated state open-meeting laws.
The Douglas County, Colo., school board voted 4 to 3 in a special meeting Friday night to fire Corey Wise without cause, dismissing the superintendent with two years left in his contract. Wise, voted in by the board last April, supported policies on in-school masking and equity that were overturned in the months since by four conservatives who campaigned against critical race theory and other diversity initiatives were elected to the board.
Its more about finding someone who better aligns, Kaylee Winegar, a member of the school board, said during the meeting. Its just what we want with this district is different.
The vote followed allegations from the boards liberal minority that the conservative members made an ultimatum in secret to Wise for him to resign or be fired through a vote actions that would violate Colorados open-meeting laws. The allegations sparked outrage in the community and resulted in one of the Denver areas largest school systems to close Thursday as 1,000 teachers, district staffers and parents protested the board in support of Wise. It also underscored mounting tensions in schools around the nation over divisive issues that have come into sharp relief amid the nations reckoning on race relations and pandemic policies.

(13,417 posts)DUers with kids, what are their thoughts on masks for your kids at school?
I was on my way home from work the other day and I was behind a school bus who made three stops ahead of me. Every single kid (mostly middle schoolers or high schoolers) who stepped off the bus was wearing a mask and very few of them removed it after exiting the bus. It wasn't cold so it's not like the masks were being used to stay warm. I didn't see anything that would make me believe kids hated wearing masks. Perhaps my area is an outlier but I am inclined to believe that if you tell kids that wearing a mask reduces the risk of them or their friends getting sick, they will wear one.

(64,995 posts)...I have experienced exactly zero kids who have an issue with the masks.
Now, I do grades 6-12 and in that age group kids get careless and masks slip down.
If I look at them & point to my nose, the mask goes up. No complaint, no whining, and 75% there's a "my bad".
So, my take is that it's the parents 99.99999%.

(3,665 posts)she's fine with wearing a mask as long as everyone else is wearing one. She doesn't want to be the only one.

(17,911 posts)Kids or at least mine were pretty malleable when it came to stuff like that. Some whining, but explain the reasoning and they're usually OK with it. Kids usually lack a lot of the political bullshit that infects adults. And what idiot programming they do have comes straight from their idiot parents.

(46,918 posts)Very conservative right wingers, religious RWNJs, took over the school board.
They ordered the high school principal to start teaching religion based classes and stop teaching science based ideas.
The principal has a PhD and told the school board NO WAY.
There is separation of church and state.
And my training is as a PhD and we go with science.
The school board fired him on the spot.
The community is very conservative, but the principal was respected and beloved. For a small community, the high school students had a high rate of college scholarships and acceptance into good colleges. The parents did not want that screwed around with.
The parents staged the biggest protest ever seen in our small town.
It was stunning. The school board agreed to delay the firing of the principal for a year. In the meantime the public arranged for another school board election. The principal and some of his friends ran and they were all elected. The idiots were forced out.

(100,063 posts)I knew this woman was trouble when I first met her. Anyway said MAGA crazy woman was in Washington DC *AT* the insurrection (we have photographic proof since she was stupid enough to post it on her Facebook page) and there was a recall attempt against her that went nowhere. Now MAGA crazy woman is speaking out against vaccine mandates and harassing other school board members. I truly hate these scumbags. Hopefully the second recall attempt against her is successful. Any other job and these idiots would have been fired a long time ago.

(6,847 posts)If not, has she been reported to the FBI?
Could the 14th amendment be applied to a school board somehow?

... those classmates that passed government/history/social studies classes with a D- (and I recall many were proud that they "passed" ) in high school. And then there are those that use them as tools.
