We had a real nightmare? Romney won the popular vote. If the electoral college is tied, the House of Representatives would determinate the winner. Romney would be the winner. But Nebraska determines its Electors by district. In the last election, the state of Nebraska voted Republican, but one district voted for Obama. Obama got one electoral vote from Nebraska. What if that happened again? Obama would win the Electoral vote 270 to Romney's 268. Obama is the winner. How would the Republicans react. How much money would Romney offer the electors to change their vote. There is no law to require electors to vote for the the person they are pledged to.

Sorry. No offense. I just couldn't resist. Please forgive me.

(44,379 posts)Bush lost the popular vote and the Republicans acted as if he had won in a landslide. Remember those pictures they kept posting showing the red counties versus the blue counties, which would evidence a land slide if acres of empty land voted as opposed to actual human beings?
So yes, if President Obama loses the popular vote but wins the electoral vote, absolutely be prepared for much bitching and moaning from the Republicans as to how he wasn't actually elected. Which is why we need President Obama to win the popular and electoral vote.
(Of course if he does that, I'm sure some will then claim voter fraud or how the President "stole" the election, or something else lame like that. There's just no winning with these folks.)

(42,025 posts)If anything, I have read that a couple of Romney electors are thinking of casting their vote for Ron Paul.

(1,956 posts)I am not sure that he was offering money, but was definitely trying to sway electors.
Electors are the most virulent supporters of the party. They're not turning.
